Night in Bethlehem Dec. 3-4 at Camp Common Ground, Dunkirk

The tenth annual Night in Bethlehem will be held at Camp Common Ground in Dunkirk on Saturday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 4.  

“Night in Bethlehem,” an interactive, hands-on recreation of ancient Bethlehem. It is held  from 4 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 3 and from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 4. “Night in Bethlehem is a walk-through tour, which is all about experiencing what life was like at the time Jesus was born.  

Nine members of ONU women’s soccer team Academic All-OAC

The Ohio Northern women's soccer team saw nine members earn Academic All-OAC honors for the 2016 campaign. 

Seniors Shelby Stephens (Cypress, Tex./Cypress Woods), Haley Napier (Beavercreek/Beavercreek), Rachel Weigman (Pickerington/North), Missy Ward (Columbus/Westerville North), and Ellie Schmalzl (Walton, Ky./Ryle), juniors Anna Niemeyer (Loveland/Loveland) and Brianna Gr uber (Middleburg Heights/Holy Name) and sophomores Sarah Puntel (Strongsville/Strongsville) and McKenna Welsh (Westerville/Bishop Hartley) all earned the honor for Northern.

Charts demonstrate expanded use since 2012

The Ada Public Library has expanded in many ways over the past four years. Several charts demonstrate that expansion.

Amanda Bennett, library director, said, “We are very proud of what we’ve accomplished in the last four years. Thank you to our patrons for pushing us to be a better library every day.”

For example, from 2012 to 2015:
• Circulation increased 137.2 percent
• Summer reading program registrations increased 57.3 percent
• Library programs and attendance in those programs increased 271 percent
• Library visits have increased 30.7 percent

“I teach to impact the lives of my students,” shares Alayne Schrock. From middle school math to middle school science to field trips and science fairs, Alayne Schrock is creating that impact each day at Ada Schools.

Monday deadline to be vendor at Vancrest holiday craft fair

Monday, Nov. 21,  is the deadline for craft vendors to reserve a table at Ada Vancrest's first-ever Craft Fair  held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10.

Reports are that the fair is drawing a lot of interest among vendors, and their are still tables available at $30, plus $5 more if you use one of their tables and $5 more if you need electricity. Call 419-558-1379.

Vancrest Ada, a nursing home and rehabilitation center, opened this year at 600 W. North Ave., across from the Ada Schools.

Here's an update on the Ada Junior Civic League from Linda Staley, secretary:

The Nov. 14 meeting was held in the home of Linda Ferguson with Shirley Chambers serving as co-hostess. 

Sherry Evans reported for the ways-n-means committee that the pecans were here and had been dispersed to all members. Due to the high volumn of sales the club would order an additional 4 cases.

Jaime Wills provided photos of the clubs donation for the Festival of Trees.  Erin Swick provided a report from Phyllis Griffith on Crock Pot Tuesday that the club hosted in October she stated the club provided food for 59 people. 

Nov. 19 memorial service for namesake of ONU's James F. Dicke College of Business Administration

James F. “Jim” Dicke, Sr., New Bremen, Ohio, died on Friday, Nov. 11, 2016.

The namesake of Ohio Northern University’s James F. Dicke College of Business Administration was 94 years old.

Dicke, the chairman emeritus of Crown Equipment Corporation, was born Jan. 30, 1922, in Ilion, New York, and raised in Dayton, Ohio. He took classes at Ohio Northern University in the early 1940s before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He considered both ONU and Culver Military Academy, of which he was an honorary graduate, his schools.

Next Red Cross blood drive Nov. 21

Ada's next American Red Cross blood drive is Monday, Nov. 21.

The drive is at Community Health Professionals, 1200 S. Main St., Ada, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:50 p.m.

 

Here's an update on Ada Kiwanis activities

Here's news updates from Jon Umphress on the Ada Kiwanis Club:

 

• Club members Carol Friesner, Marilyn Green, and Sandy Neely will chair a committee to plan and organize the club’s annual Christmas Luncheon/ Auction.  

The event will be held at the Community Health Professionals on Tuesday Dec. 13, at noon. Members of the Lima Kiwanis Club and the Ada Rotary Club will be invited to attend to attend. Gift of books to classes at the Ada Elementary Nursery School will presented by the club. Auction proceeds will be donated to the Ada Food Pantry.

Kid's shopping spree at ReStore on Dec. 9

Ada youth have the chance to meet Santa and join in a kid's shopping spree from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9, in ReStore Community Center.

Area youth can shop for their parents and siblings free of charge during the evening. Refreshments will be served.

This event at ReStore is in partnership with Quest Federal Credit Union.
