Ada loses hard fought battle to St. Henry in regional semifinal round

Faced with bad weather and a large point deficit to overcome late in the game, Ada fought a stiff battle against the St. Henry Redskins of the Midwest Athletic Conference, but came up just short of victory with a final score of 40-35 last Friday night at Lima Stadium.

Betty Jo Sherman, 1934-2012

Betty Jo Sherman, 78, died on Monday, Nov. 5, 2012 at 6:10 p.m. at Richland Manor Nursing Home, Bluffton.

She was born on Sept. 27, 1934 in Hardin County, Ohio to Carl B. and Rhea (McElroy) Gardner who preceded her in death.

She first married Grover Boutwell and they were divorced and he preceded her in death in 1975. She then married Billy L. Sherman on June 13, 1973 and he survives in Ada.

Betty was a homemaker. She was a member of the Living Faith Ministries in Mendon, Ohio. She was a life member of the Ada VFW Post #9381 Women's Auxiliary and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Post #3003 Ladies Auxiliary of Findlay.

Alison Steinbrunner named USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year

Senior Alison Steinbrunner has been named USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year in voting conducted by Division III coaches.

On Saturday, she won the she won the Great Lakes Regional Women's Cross Country Championships in 21:00.

Steinbrunner's time broke her own school record and was 37 seconds faster than any other runner in the field.

The No. 30 Polar Bears finished seventh out of 33 teams with 247 points.
Stenibrunner also won the OAC Championship y 41 seconds and claimed the UW-Oshkosh Brook's Invite title as well.

Ada Kiwanis Club prepares for Nov. 15 spaghetti supper

President Myrna McCurdy called the 7th meeting (Nov. 13) of the 2012-2013 Ada Kiwanis year to order at 12:00 noon at McIntosh Center, ONU.

The invocation was offered by Jon Umphress.

Guests introduced: Katie Lorson and Allie Puntel, from ONU Circle K.

Katie was wished a happy birthday in song. (Nov. 13th)
Tom Kier announced that he is now a great uncle.

ONU Holiday Spectacular opens Thursday at Freed Center

The Freed Center for the Performing Arts presents the ONU Holiday Spectacular. The show is underwritten in part by the DeBow and Catherine Freed Endowment for the Arts and Kewpee Hamburger.

This holiday show has become a tradition to many patrons and area residents over the years. It gets everyone in the holiday spirit with its famous characters and familiar tunes. This year will introduce a few new characters and some new holiday favorites. Don’t miss the opportunity to join in the fun.

Ada schools are busy this month. Here's a capsule of events on the school calendar:

          Nov. 27th 2-Hour Early Dismiss due to Teacher-In-Service
          Nov. 29th Picture Retake Day- Order forms in the high school office

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES: for students in grades K-12 on Monday, Nov. 19 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 10 to 8 pm. Students will attend school on Monday, Nov. 19. There will not be school on Nov. 20 and 21. Thanksgiving break is Nov. 22 and 23.

Ada Public Library seeks donations for first-ever holiday silent auction; next book discussion on Dec. 4

 

Several events are underway at the Ada Public Library.

Holiday silent auction

The first-ever holiday silent acution is planned, but needs donated themed baskets from the community.

According to the library staff: The baskets - and think outside the box, feel free to bring your donation in in another kind of style! - will be auctioned off and will serve as wonderful holiday gifts; think about creating a basket which contains things that represent your business/organization, or life in Ada. Donations are tax-deductible.

IRS seeks volunteers for free tax prep programs in Ohio

Recruitment is underway throughout Ohio for volunteers and partner organizations for the Internal Revenue Service’s free tax preparation programs.  Volunteers must receive training and achieve certification over the next two months to be ready for the start of the 2013 tax filing season.

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free tax help to seniors as well as to low-to-moderate income and disabled individuals.  Partner organizations set up free tax preparation sites in local communities, where volunteers meet with and assist qualifying taxpayers.

Brandon Huber wins NFL/College contest week 2

Brandon Huber is the winner of the Icon Week 2 College NLF football contest, according to Corey Greer, contest judge.

Huber, Duane Bollenbacher and John Clevidence all picked 11 games correctly.  Bollenbacher was eliminated in Tie-Breaker 1 by picking Northwestern to lose 1-3 while the other two correctly picked Northwestern to lose 4-10.  In Tie-Breaker 2 Clevidence picked Cincinnati to lose by 11 or more while Huber picked the Bengals to win by 1-3 (closer to the actual win of 18 points).
