World pneumonia day is Nov 12

The Allen County Public Health Department is reminding the community that Nov 12 is designated as World Pneumonia Day.

The bacteria that causes pneumococcal pneumonia, Streptococcus pneumoniae, is responsible for approximately 1.6 million deaths world-wide.  It is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable illness and death in the United States.

Anyone can get the disease, especially during flu season, but some individuals are at greater risk than others.  Those include:

Smoke free law is alive and well

In November 2006, Ohioans passed the Smoke-Free Workplace Act, making Ohio the 12th state to protect all workers and the public from exposure to secondhand smoke in public places.  Approximately 280,000 Ohio worksites are impacted by this law.

To be in compliance with this law, workplaces must prohibit smoking, remove ashtrays and post no-smoking signs with the toll-fee enforcement number (1-800-559-OHIO).  Local health departments have the ability to enforce this law, but the process is complaint-driven and a call must be placed to the toll-free enforcement number to begin the process.

Dr. Samuel Heiks: Foot Pain. When to start running again?

Dr. Heiks is a board certified Family Medicine doctor and lives in  Bluffton, Ohio.

Dear Dr. Heiks: This summer I started running and have really enjoyed walk/running about 3 miles 3-4 times a week. When I run I have improved energy and mood. However, my 50-year-old feet aren't so happy. I think I developed plantar fasciitis: my feet started to feel stiff and uncomfortable when I got up in the morning or after I sat for a long period.

Commentary: My first presidential election voting experience

Note: Alli Walbolt, an ONU student, is an intern for The Ada Icon this fall.

Being able to exercise my right to vote has always been an exciting thing for me. In 2010 I registered to vote within a month of my 18th birthday. I couldn’t wait to vote in my first ever election, though it wasn’t quite as glamorous.

This year was my first presidential election and I was more involved in politics than I ever had been. I watched the debates and other political coverage, read articles and candidate platforms, and researched issues and people that would be on my ballot.
