Here's an ONU spring sports update.
Brody Hahn - Josh Bever receive OAC honors
Ohio Northern senior Brody Hahn (Louisville), sophomore Josh Bever (Ashland) and freshman Peyton Wilson (Lima/Shawnee) all received weekly honors for their efforts in a 47-6 football victory at Capital on Friday night.
Hahn and Wilson were named the Ohio Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
Bever was named to the D3football.com national Team of the Week at defensive end.
Hahn accounted for five touchdowns and 418 yards of total offense against Capital. He threw for 312 yards and two scores and ran 11 times for 106 yards and three touchdowns.
Wilson led the ONU defense with a career-high 14 tackles.
Bever had seven tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks for the Polar Bears. This marks the second time this season that Bever has been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.
Ohio Northern will return to action on Friday night with a 7 p.m. kickoff against Wilmington at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
Volleyball
The Ohio Northern volleyball team ran its winning streak to six matches with a pair of 3-set victories over Heidelberg on Tuesday night at the ONU Sports Center.
Junior Melina Woods (Ada) had 30 kills in the two matches to lead the Polar Bears (10-2 overall, 10-2 Ohio Athletic Conference).
The Student Princes fall to 5-7, 5-7.
Woods had 14 kills and freshman Sydney Eggleton (Southfield, Mich./Farmington) had 12 kills as ONU won the opening match 25-15, 25-11, 25-19.
ONU scored the first 11 points of the opening set to set the tone for the evening.
Junior Hannah Irmer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) had 17 digs and junior Kiki Carle (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) dished out 37 assists.
In the second match, the Polar Bears won 25-10, 25-18, 25-20.
Woods had 16 kills and freshman Ava Ehlinger (New Carlisle/Tecumseh) had 13 kills for ONU.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Friday when they host Capital at Noon on Senior Day.
Women's lacrosse
Freshman Avary Snyder (Uniontown/Lake) scored a career-high five goals as the Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team fell 14-11 against Otterbein Wednesday night at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears move to 4-6 overall and 4-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Cardinals improve to 7-3, 7-3.
Synder led ONU with 5 goals, sophomore Meredith Miller (Noblesville, Ind.) added a pair of goals and senior Annie McArn (Bay Village/Western Reserve Academy) added two goals and an assist.
Trailing 10-4 with 25:57 remaining in the second, the Polar Bears scored 5 goals in a row to cut the lead to 10-9 with 19:33 remaining.
Otterbein then responded with a 3-0 run to lengthen the lead to 13-9 with 6:55 remaining, and held on for the win.
The Cardinals started the game with five straight goals.
OU out-shot ONU 32-27.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday night with a 7 p.m. contest at Mount Union.
Women's soccer
Seniors Siena Ward (Newport Beach, Cal./Newport Harbor) and Abigail Mathews (Liberty Township/Lakota East) each recorded a goal as the Ohio Northern women's soccer team defeated Heidelberg 2-0 Thursday night at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears remain undefeated and in first place of the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 6-0-0 record (6-0-0 overall), while the Student Princes fall to 0-4-2, 0-4-2.
ONU struck first with Ward's early goal assisted by a long pass from midfield by freshman Kylie Cabana (Dexter, Mich.) with 21:17 remaining in the first half.
Matthews sealed the game with a penalty kick goal in the 76th minute, after Ward drew the penalty within the box.
Junior Kristy Catrine (Springboro) recorded two saves in her sixth consecutive shutout in goal. She ran her scoreless streak to 533 minutes this season and 536 minutes in her career.
ONU out-shot HU 22-6 and had a 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Monday with a 7 p.m. contest against Capital in a battle of league unbeatens at Kerscher Stadium.
Men's soccer
Junior Bryan Kern (Rocky River) scored a pair of goals and dished out an assist to lead the Ohio Northern men's soccer to a 6-2 victory Thursday night at Heidelberg at Mayer Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 2-3-1 overall and are 2-3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Student Princes fall to 0-6-0, 0-6-0.
Northern scored three times in a 4:29 span in the first half to take a 3-0 lead with 8:05 left in the first half.
Junior Levi King (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) scored the first go9al off an assist from Kern at 32:26 of the opening half.
Kern scored unassisted at 34:10 and junior Seth Gundlach (Wilmington) scored off an assist from Matt Studenic(Wadsworth) at 36:55 to make it 3-0.
Senior Todd Federici (Findlay) got a goal off an assist from junior Jacob Scheufler (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) with 21 seconds in the half to lead 4-0 at intermission.
Kern added his second goal 9:28 into the second half off an assist from senior Zach Yoder (Goshen, Ind./Northridge).
After HU got opn the board in the 65th minute, sophomore Aaron Shelton (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) scored at 69:41 to make it 6-1.
ONU out-shot HU 25-5, and held the advantage in corner kicks 3-1.
The Polar Bears will return to action Monday night with a 7 p.m. contest at Capital.
