Two Ohio Northern University students in the West Central Ohio Medical Laboratory Science program have received the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) National Student Honor Award. Jen Tabar, a senior biology major from Hinkley, Ohio, and Stephen Pavlock, a post-baccalaureate certificate candidate who received his Bachelor of Science from West Virginia University, will be presented with a certificate from the ASCP at ONU’s graduation celebration on May 10.
To be eligible for the award, students must be a current laboratory science student, be a student member of ASCP, have a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrate participation in leadership and community service activities.
According to Barbara Caldwell, chair of the ASCP Council for Laboratory Professions, “The ASCP established the National Student Honor Award to recognize students in the laboratory profession who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to community service and leadership activities. Through this award, ASCP wishes to acknowledge future leaders for the medical laboratory profession and to make others aware of the profession's contributions.”
Tabar, an ONU honors program student, has been involved with Girl Scouts of America (earning the Gold Award), is a member of the Beta Beta Beta national biological honorary society and the Psi Chi psychology honor society, and has participated in Colleges Against Cancer (earning the most valued new member award) and Relay for Life (serving as event chair).
In addition to achieving the required GPA, Pavlock has been involved with Boy Scouts of America (earning the Eagle Scout award), is an American Red Cross lifeguard, has participated in Colleges Against Cancer and Relay for Life, has served as a volunteer in the pediatric and cancer units at West Virginia’s Ruby Memorial Hospital, and has participated in numerous community outreach activities through his church in Wheeling, W.Va.
