Guss Holbrook, 95, formerly of Harrod, died at 8 p.m. Dec. 25, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Bonanza, Ky., to George W. and Rachel Music Holbrook, who preceded him in death. His stepmother, Bertha Holbrook, also preceded him in death. In April 1937, he married Dorothy Gibson, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 13, 1966, he married Betty Holbrook, who survives in Lima.
Mr. Holbrook retired as a sheet metal worker from Clark Equipment, after 34 years. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9381, Ada, and a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 19, Lima. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 82nd Airborne, and received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifleman Badge, American Service Medal and the Victory Medal.
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia (Miles) Shelton, of Kenton; eight sons, Bill (Cheryl) Holbrook, Bob (Sandy) Holbrook, Sam Holbrook and Rob Holbrook, all of Lima, Jeff (Tracy) Holbrook, of Spencerville, Tony (Eva) Holbrook, of Harrod, John (Dawn) Holbrook, of Lima, and Warren (Stephanie) Holbrook, of Bluffton; a sister, Lillian Allen, of Lima; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ballard, Jake, Gale and James Holbrook; and three sisters, Eva Jean Butler, Letha Williams and Naoma Lowe.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger. Pastor Dan Holbrook will officiate. Burial will be in Preston Cemetery, Alger, with military rites by VFW Post 9381.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
