Women's tennis advances in tourney
The Ohio Northern women's tennis team advanced in the Ohio Athletic Conference for the 16th consecutive season by posting a 5-0 victory over Marietta on Tuesday afternoon at University Courts.
The second-seeded Polar Bears improve to 21-4 on the year and are now a perfect 16-0 in the quarterfinals in the 16-year history of the OAC Tournament.
Seventh-seeded Marietta ends its season at 3-18.
Freshman Kaleigh Cummins(Springfield/Northeastern) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles to lead the Polar Bears, who did not lose a game in any of their victories.
Northern swept the three doubles matches by 8-0 scores and won by forfeit at No. 6 singles to get the win.
Junior Lynn Kelly (Mason) and sophomore Ashley Ochsenhirt (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, seniors Christina Corbean (Dayton/Oakwood) and Brittany Toney (Greenwood, Ind.) won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles and freshmen Mackenzie Wills (Ada) and Katherine Curry (Oxford/Talawanda) won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.
The Polar Bears will advance to the semifinals, scheduled for Friday at 4:30 pm at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
The finals are scheduled for Saturday at 2 pm in Mason.
