Better Than Chicken Wire!

Chicken wire is a thin, flexible mesh of galvanized steel with hexagonal gaps meant to contain chickens and fowl. The wire comes in gap diameters of ½, 1, and 2 inches with gauges between 19 and 22. Chicken wire was used during World War II for radar fields and over helmets to insert leaves to make camouflage. Chicken wire can block radio and Wi-Fi signals by creating a Faraday cage. The Faraday cage was invented in 1936 by Michael Faraday to protect sensitive electronic equipment within an enclosure from external radio waves. So why am I writing about chicken wire?

The ONU English Department has a new neighbor with literary roots. Starbucks Coffee--coming soon to Main and College Ave--is named after first mate Starbuck in the novel Moby Dick.

Ronda L Hughes taught at Kenton City Schools

Ronda L Hughes met Jesus on Sept. 3, 2021, passing away peacefully at Marion General Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Alger on February 14, 1931, to the late Pauline (Ewing) and Ronald Underwood. She married the late Conrad Hughes on February 14, 1950.

Glenna J. Marquart owned and operated Twin Lakes Campground

Glenna J. Marquart, age 95, passed away on Monday, September 6, 2021 at 12:00 a.m. at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton.

​She was born on February 10, 1926 in Bluffton, Ohio to the late Howard Swick and Mary Luginbuhl.  On August 17, 1946 Glenna married Robert H. Marquart and he preceded her in death in February of 2003.

​Glenna was the owner and operator of Twin Lakes Campground. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Evangelical Church, Jenera. She was a 1944 graduate of Bluffton High School.

​She is survived by her daughter, Denise (Anthony) Testa of Leroy, NY.

2021 Hardin County Carcass Show of Champions

Have you ever wondered how well the grand and reserve champion fair animals will grade out on the rail? Because of pandemic concerns, the OSU Extension office is announcing that the 2021 Hardin County Fair Carcass Show of Champions will again be held virtually after this year’s Hardin County Fair. 

Bluffton College Fair September 8

Bluffton University will host a College Fair including Ohio Northern University from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, in Sommer Center. Representatives from more than 30 colleges and universities from Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky will be on campus.

The current list of schools attending is listed on the registration page. Registration is appreciated but not required and walk-ins are welcome.

Tours of Bluffton’s campus will be offered to families who are interested.
