Winter roads: Why you may not see excess salt on the roads

We often hear in medical reports that when it comes to salt, we can have too much of a good thing. Though the “salt” we use on winter roadways is a different product, the same wisdom holds true. But do you know why too much salt on the road is not a good thing?

Some people learn best by seeing the end result of our actions.

The next time you are travelling down Route 30 or 75, take a look at the trees growing along the sides of the highway. Are the evergreens looking brown, especially toward the ground? There is a good chance that those trees are suffering from the salt spray that is projected off the highway by vehicles.

ONU Symphony performs afternoon concert Feb. 23

Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts presents the Ohio Northern University Symphony on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 4:30 p.m.


The ONU Symphony Orchestra will perform “Night on Bald Mountain” by Modest Mussorgsky followed by “Concerto for the Flute” by Carl Nelson, featuring ONU senior Marissa Mauro. The concert will conclude with Borodin’s “Symphony No. 2.” Borodin is considered one of the great Russian composers, known as The Mighty Handful, along with Mussorgsky, Rimksy-Korsakov and others.

"Cinema as a Social Tool" Black History Month lecture

The Ohio Northern University Office of Multicultural Development and the Department of English present acclaimed filmmaker Ya’Ke Smith on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. in the McIntosh Ballroom to help celebrate Black History Month.          
           
During his lecture, titled “Art Reflecting Life, Life Reflecting Art: Cinema as a Social Tool,” Smith will discuss his experiences as a filmmaker and how his work seeks to debunk negative stereotypes, while sometimes using those same stereotypes to expose truths in the black community.

Bluffton Hospital recognized for excellence in lactation care

The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) have recognized Bluffton Hospital and Blanchard Valley Hospital (BVH) for excellence in lactation care.

Bluffton and BVH have received the IBCLC Care Award in recognition for staffing professionals who hold the prestigious International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification (IBCLC) and providing a lactation program that is available five to seven days a week for breastfeeding families.

ApolloPalooza Feb. 11 at Apollo Career Center

Apollo Career Center will hold its second ApolloPalooza on February 11, 2014, 5:30-7 p.m., to kick-off National Career and Technical Education Month. ApolloPalooza will showcase both the high school and adult education programs. The event is free and open to the public.

“Because Apollo is not a traditional high school or college, and because adults and high school students are being trained during the day and evening, Apollo is opening up the building, for the public to see and experience what Apollo students learn everyday,” said Dana Dukes-Norton, district communications manager.

How cold was it?

Not much new to report in the weather. Four of the recent five days experienced lows below zero and the temperature hasn't been above 32 for 10 days.
