Icon scones are so simple you think part of the recipe is missing

Last night I watched a Miss Marple BBC movie. As the various murder plots unraveled some where in a small English tea joint scones were served. Several times.

Scones. Man, did those sound good. So, I started roaming through some bread recipe books on the shelf. The most difficult part of the process was figuring out how to spell S-C-O-N-E-S.

Once that mystery was resolved the basic scone recipe appeared on page 369. Creating scones is so simple one wonders if there’s a mistake in the recipe. Maybe a page is missing.

Not so. It’s really pretty simple. The difficult part is deciding what special ingredients to add. (more later)

Selection process for next GROB apprenticeship program starts in March

HIGH SCHOOL GRADS GET PAID WHILE THEY LEARN IN GROB APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Most high school juniors and seniors prepare for their future by entering college or the workforce. What few realize is that the right high school graduate can have both.

Apprenticeships can offer high school graduates opportunities to be paid while they learn. The GROB Systems, Inc., Bluffton, apprenticeship program allow apprentices to earn an associate degree and be trained to enter its highly-skilled workforce.

The next selection process for GROB’s apprentice program takes place in March. Details on the class are at the bottom of this story.

Caromel Homan was former owner of C&H Dairy Queen, Alger

Caromel Homan, 84, died on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at 4:35 a.m. at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.

She was born on Nov. 26, 1929 in Breathitt County, Ky., to Corbett and Mary "Maggie" (Higgins) Clemons and they preceded her in death. She first married Jay Conley and he died in October of 1956. She then married on Dec. 22, 1959, Dr. John Homan and he died in November of 1982.

Michael Raines worked for Busy B Realty and owned Raines Quality Homes

Michael S. Raines, 51, died on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at 8:03 a.m. at Lima Memorial Health Systems, Lima.

He was born on January 28, 1963 in Lima, Ohio to James C. and Marilyn (Jacomet) and they preceded him in death. On June 29, 1985 he married Patricia Zimmerly and she survives in Ada.

HealthChek closes but new doors open for Alisa Armbrecht

Usually a smile quickly comes to Alisa Armbrecht of Ada as she greets customers at HealthChek at 117 S. Main St. 

But this day, the store’s final day, everything  is bittersweet. It’s a little harder for that smile to come. But get Alisa reminiscing or telling a favorite story and pretty soon you’ll be laughing along with her at the oddities and funniness of even little things that she and others do to make sometimes the ordinary just a little more enjoyable and never humdrum.

"I'm pretty much a chocolate guy. I'm up for any type of chocolate. Any chocolate." (quote from Denis Leary)

We didn't see Denis at the Ada Public Library on Thursday night. Maybe he was there in spirit. There was plenty of chocolate and Denis would have approved.

The event was the pre-Valentine's Day Ada Public Library's second annual chocolate bake-off. In our opinion, and in smiles viewed by all present, all the desserts were winners.

Judges Bob Simmons, Jill Simmons and Deb Curlis had the difficult task of selecting three winners. Here's how their tastebuds guided their thinking:
