Polar Plunge: Teeth-chattering good time

Photos and story by Monty Siekerman
The wind chill was colder in Ada than in Fairbanks, Juneau, and Anchorage, nevertheless some brave, furless polar bears took a plunge into the campus Polar Bear Pond on Saturday afternoon.

The shivering experience was all for a good cause: to raise money for the American Red Cross. About $2,000 was expected to be raised at the event.

The fifth annual Polar Plunge drew about 150 students and members of the community who paid to take a dip and got pledges from friends who dared them to do so.

When dusk falls

Ada is a charming village. When dusk falls in the winter, the charm takes on a idylic look. Consider these photos by Ken Collins. Here's Viva Maria's. Click here for additional scenes of Ada in the dusk of a winter's day.

Dusk in winter creates interesting scenes in Ada.

Ken Collins photographed several scenes on Saturday evening.

MORE PHOTOS AT BOTTOM OF STORY -

Shots include the Presbyterian Church silhouetted against the evening sky, as well as the wind turbines on the west side of town. The Ada Theatre was all lit up for Saturday evening's show.

It might have been 14 degrees Fahrenheit outside, but the cold weather was apparently not enough to keep folks away from the yummy Italian food at Viva Maria's or the faithful from Saturday evening Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes.
