The Ohio Northern women's basketball team moved up to a season high ranking of No. 4 in this week's D3hoops.com poll and USA Today Sports Division III Top 25 Coaches poll.

The Polar Bears received 522 votes in the D3hoops.com poll, which was 25 more than they received in last weeks poll.

DePauw (Ind.) stayed at the top of the poll with 623 points and 23 of the 25 first place votes, Calvin (Mich) is ranked second with 603 points and the two remaining first place votes and Hope (Mich.) is third with 563 points.

Heidelberg upset No. 17 Ohio Northern 21-11 in an Ohio Athletic Conference wrestling dual meet Tuesday night at Sieberling Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears fall to 15-3 overall and are OAC tri-champions with a 4-1 league mark.

The Student Princes improve to 11-8 overall and 4-1 in OAC action. Mount Union also shared the league title with a 4-1 record.

Defending national champion, three-time All-American and top-ranked senior Kyle Kwiat posted his NCAA-leading 20th tech fall at 174 pounds to lead ONU.

He won 18-0 in 4:19 to improve to 34-3 on the season.

Mike Schmitz has been named an assistant football coach at Ohio Northern.

He will coach the quarterbacks.

Schmitz comes to ONU after a 13-year stint as head football coach at Wooster, where he compiled a 74-54 record.

He was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2008 and was the Lee Tressel Ohio College Coach of the Year in 2004.

In 2004, he guided the Scots to an 11-1 record and a No. 6 national ranking.

He also served as offensive coordinator at Wooster from 1995-2000.

Prior to his 18 seasons at Wooster, Schmitz enjoyed a highly successful high school coaching career.

The Ohio Northern women's tennis team picked up a 7-2 victory over St. Mary's (Ind.), but fell to Case Western Reserve by an 8-1 score on Saturday.

The Polar Bears record now stands at 7-1 on the season.

In the first match against St. Mary's, ONU won two of the three doubles courts.

Junior Michelle Tuma and freshmanRachael Miller scored an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles and sophomores Brittany Millerand Kristin Cellentani won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Junior Mathew Johnson was third in the 1-mile and fourth in the 3k to lead the Ohio Northern men's indoor track and field team at the All-Ohio Championships on Saturday afternoon at Otterbein's Rike Center.

The Polar Bears (24-7 overall) scored 48.5 points, less than a point from a top-3 finish.

Mount Union won the team title with 111.5 points, Ohio Wesleyan was second with 73 points and Otterbein and Baldwin Wallace tied for third with 49 points each.

Johnson finished third in the 1-mile run in 4:25.36 and was fourth in the 3,000-meter run in 8:54.92.

Junior Cenzie Yoder and senior Joanna Snyder each posted double-doubles as the No. 5 Ohio Northern women's basketball team posted a 70-58 win over Heidelberg on Wednesday at the ONU Sports Center.

With the win, the Polar Bears now stand at 21-1 on the season and 15-0 in OAC play, while the Student Princes fall to 5-17, 1-14.

The win clinches a share of the OAC regular season championship, the first for ONU since the 1987-88 season.

"It has been our number one goal all season to win the OAC championship," said head coach Michele Durand. "We will now look to capture the title outright."
