Ada Food Pantry sees increased need, welcomes donations

By Paula Scott

The Icon recently toured the Ada Food Pantry, a non-profit organization that provides food assistance twice a week from the Ada Presbyterian Church at 201 S. Main St., with its own entrance on Lincoln Ave.

Volunteer Beth Gray explained that the food pantry, created in 1976 and renovated in 2006 by local Habitat for Humanities volunteers, is experiencing an increased demand for services, likely because inflation has impacted so many households.

As the attached chart (on page 2) shows, demand was higher about five years ago. However, the local need is currently growing. In November alone, seven new families signed up for food assistance.

The Food Pantry is best known for the opportunity for income eligible individuals who live in Ada or Liberty Township, or who have an Ada postal address, to select items they need from the pantry shelves. Canned goods and other shelf stable items are available, as well as bread, eggs, milk, cheese and frozen meats. In November, a bonus frozen turkey breast is offered. At Easter and at the Fourth of July, ham and barbecued beef are available. The Pantry also provides gift cards to Community Market.

An apple or aspirin a day?

By Karen Kier
Pharmacist on behalf of the ONU HealthWise team

Health strategies have recommended both an aspirin a day or an apple a day to keep the doctor away.  What are the benefits and risks of these strategies in managing your health?

Depending on the variety and the geographic region, apples are in season from late July to early November.  However, apples can be stored for long periods of time by controlling the atmosphere with a combination of temperature, humidity, oxygen and carbon dioxide. This is one reason why apples can be a fruit available year-round.

Bulldog wrestlers seek continued improvement; two girls on roster

Season opens December 3 at Cory-Rawson Duals

By Cort Reynolds

The Ada varsity wrestling program looks to be improved behind a deep sophomore class under veteran head coach/co-athletic director Eric Perkins.

Eight grapplers on the relatively youthful roster are returning lettermen. That experienced group will combine with several newcomers, including two girls, to form a potentially solid squad.

Ten of the 19 wrestlers on the roster are sophomores, with just one senior on the squad. Five juniors and three freshmen complete the roster.
