Varsity Singers equipment truck and trailer experience icy roads

The Ada Exempted Village Schools has reported that the Varsity Singer equipment truck and trailer went off the road on SR 235 near the VFW this morning, March 4: "All are ok and no students were involved. The Varsity Singers have canceled their trip to the Solon competition."

There are road closures from overnight flooding and the possiblity of black ice.

While the day's forecast looks promising (mostly sunny, with a high near 45) for areas north of Ada, the National Weather Service issued this warning:

...Slick and Icy Roads Possible Overnight (March 3)... With wet and slushy roads tonight across the area from the earlier snowfall and rainfall, roads already in many spots are hazardous with several reports of vehicles sliding off of roadways.

Overnight lows will fall into the upper 20s and lower 30s which could freeze the wet surfaces making them even more hazardous in spots with black ice development and even freezing the slushy wet snow further making for very slick surfaces, especially over bridges and overpasses.

Definitely recommended to not travel if possible. If travel is necessary, be sure to slow down and leave plenty of stopping distance in front of you in case you need to stop suddenly. Be safe out there.

Governor speaks about derailment response training for rural areas, volunteer firefighters

Governor DeWine announced on March 1 that he has spoken with the CEOs of both Norfolk Southern and CSX railroads about the need for increased train derailment response training for first responders.

Because most rail miles in Ohio are in rural areas, volunteer firefighters are most likely to be the first on scene to a train derailment. However, there is currently very little training for volunteers on responding to trail derailments.

Governor DeWine reported that the CEOs of both railroads were in favor of working with the State of Ohio to increase railroad-specific training for Ohio's first responders.

Governor DeWine also announced that the Ohio Public Utilities Commission currently has up to $800,000 in grant funding available to help Ohio's smaller fire departments pay for critically important training.

Today through May 31, PUCO will be taking applications for their annual hazardous materials training grant program. Among the opportunities funded through this program are “rail hazardous materials response training” and hazardous material incident response.

Funding for these grants is from fines paid by hazardous material carriers and shippers. More information is available at www.puco.ohio.gov.
