Hardin County H2Ohio Update

H2Ohio is water quality plan to reduce harmful algal blooms, improve wastewater infrastructure, and prevent lead contamination.

Update from HARDIN SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT:

As we wind down on the first round of H2Ohio, we have learned and grown a lot. We are beginning to prepare for round two of H2Ohio enrollment. Round two of enrollment will be open to all Hardin County producers.

United Way of Hardin County Board elects new officers

KENTON— At their April meeting, the Board of Directors of the United Way of Hardin County held their annual reorganization meeting and elected new officers. 

The United Way’s new officers include:

Angela Newland, Vice President
Jack McBride, Immediate Past President
Shannon Larrabee, Secretary

Nearly 1,700 Ohio children involved in bicycle-related crashes since 2018

May is Bike Helmet Safety Awareness Month. Nearly 10,000 bicycle helmets will be going to children across Ohio this spring thanks to the Put A Lid On It! campaign, a continued partnership between the Ohio Department of Transportation and the American Academy of Pediatrics--Ohio Chapter.

Partners from nearly 160 law enforcement agencies and community organizations, Safe Routes to School programs, and Safe Communities programs traveled to Columbus to pick up their allotment of helmets.

May 2023 food pantry report

The Ada Food Pantry at 201 S. Main reports:

"At present the Pantry is particularly low on rice products and dish soap. 

"However, Pantry use in 2023 has been much higher (comparison HERE) than in the past few years, so we greatly appreciate all donations from the community!"

Safe driving reminders for prom night

Prom is an exciting time for high school students and it should be a night to remember. Make it memorable for all the right reasons–keep the celebrations free of alcohol and drive safe. Area law enforcement will have extra enforcement scheduled for prom weekends.

The Lima/Allen County Safe Community Coalition wants to remind young drivers to be especially cautious during these special celebrations.

With all the excitement that comes with Prom, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment. Just remember, it only takes a moment for your life to change forever.
Remember to:

  • Drive responsibly – prom nights are among the most lethal for young people. About 5,000 are injured or killed nationwide in traffic crashes in a typical prom weekend.
  • Don’t Text – in accordance with new state laws, put the phone down. No text, call, song change, time crunch, or conversation is worth risking your life- #ArriveAlive.
  • Drink non-alcoholic beverages – many prom night crashes are alcohol-related; alcohol will impair judgment and reflexes.
  • Be a good friend – if a friend has been drinking, convince them to stay put or call for a ride.
  • Be smart – don’t ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Buckle-up – 70% of teens killed on prom weekends were not wearing seatbelts.
  • Be alert – Sleepy drivers are a big danger on the road- Stay Awake and Stay Alive!

Ohio Victory Gardens offers free seeds

HARDIN COUNTY–It’s time once again to get your hands dirty and start growing! The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and Ohio State University Extension offices are kicking off the fourth year of the Ohio Victory Gardens program. Due to high demand, the program has expanded to include 50, up from 42 counties last year. Thousands of seed sample kits are available for free to the public to get people planting.

Specific days and times for each office are available on the Ohio Victory Gardens website, as well as planting resources and information. Hardin County OSU Extension will make available Ohio Victory Garden seed packets containing a combination of carrots, cucumber, lettuce, and sunflowers. Seeds are currently available at the Hardin County OSU Extension Office, 1021 W Lima Street in Kenton and will also be available at its annual Master Gardener Volunteers Plant Sale being held Saturday, May 20 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm in the Friendship Gardens of Hardin County located at 960 W Kohler Street in Kenton.
