A Badertscher family story with an Ada connection

It relates to the Edwin and Rose Badertscher Simon family

FROM BLUFFTON ICON - Bluffton Icon features a weekly series of Swiss immigrant families who settled in the Bluffton and Pandora area. One of those family members, Rosa Badertscher married Edwin Simon and that couple moved to the Ada area and had 6 boys and 2 girls. This is the story of that larger Badertscher family.

Karl and Anna Weber Badertscher and family are this week’s focus.

A previous column featured Peter and Anna Aeschliman Badertscher (Jan. 21, 2021) and we are unable to find any connections between these two Badertschers.

Barth Montel recognized for teaching accomplishments

Quest Federal Credit Union's Ada teacher of the year

Ada elementary teacher, Barth Montel, was recognized Friday by Quest Federal Credit Union, along with one teacher from each of the schools in Hardin County, as Hardin County’s Teachers of the Year.

The ceremony was accompanied by a luncheon at Ada’s, Viva Mari Restaurant.

According to Meri Skilliter, Ada superintendent, “Mr. Montel was generous with his time and expertise, helping colleagues learn more about maximizing apps and programs and platforms so they could best engage students remotely.

“He spent the first semester, switching job assignments with aplomb, to accommodate online option students.

She'll be an artist-in-residence

Melina Woods selected to participate in Vanderbilt summer program

Melina Woods, an Ada High School graduate and a junior biology major at Ohio Northern University, will be an artist-in-residence this summer.

 She was recently selected to participate in the Summer 2021 Artist in Residence program at the Vanderbilt Institute for Infection, Immunology and Inflammation, Nashville, Tennessee.

The AiR program is an opportunity for undergraduate students interested in art-science intersections to explore innovative means of science communication.

Ada freshman is state-wide library contest winner

Thalia Detty used her graphic art skills in a book cover competition

Is Ada High School freshman Thalia Detty the model for the book cover “Viola in Reel Life”?

The photo with this story certainly suggests it. However, the answer is, “maybe.”

Thalia submitted her photo entry for the state-wide Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA) and was selected statewide winner of the solo category. It was one of three contest categories.

The contest was part of the OELMA’s celebration of National School Library Month in April.

"The challenge was to include people somehow in with a book cover," said Chanda Smith, Ada school media center director.

Anna Shulaw will celebrate her 100th birthday May 16

The family of Anna Shulaw is celebrating her 100th birthday with a card shower and open house on Sunday, May 16.

Cards may be sent to Anna at 1822 State Route 81, Ada, Ohio 45810. The open house is from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Ada Park community center, corner of Simon Street and North Park Drive.

No gifts please, and CDC covid guidelines will be followed.
