Icon dog of the week - Diamond

Meet Diamond, Diamond is a 10 year old Husky/Akita mix. He is ready for his new home.

To give a dog a forever home, contact the Hardin County dog shelter. It is located at 49 Jones Road on the west side of Kenton.

Hours: 9 am to 4 pm on Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Phone: 419-674-2209.

Generally, about 20 to 25 dogs are available for viewing.

The shelter is also the place to contact for giving up a dog, if you find a lost or stray dog, or if you come in contact with a vicious dog. It costs $20 to surrender a dog, which pays for deworming and immunizations for when it is rescued.

An honor that developed over one-half century

On a job well done by Ada's swimming lady, Saundra Neely

Burt Lancaster starred in the movie “The Swimmer” in 1968, the year Saundra Neely began teaching Red Cross swim lessons in Ada. After 50 years, the movie may lay dusty on a shelf in a film museum somewhere, but Saundra Neely hasn’t put down her swim instruction manual quite yet.

On July 16, Mrs. Neely will begin teaching water safety once again, but this year will be her last as volunteer water safety instructor at the Ada Municipal Swimming Pool. Again this year, for two weeks in July, she will teach children, youth and adults in four different skill levels.

Lacrosse is down; soccer on the way

Time to change to field stripes

By Monty Siekerman
This is one big erasure.

The lines on the ONU field on the west side of the stadium are being erased since lacrosse season is over and the university will host several soccer camps on this field this summer.

Physical plant summer employees Chloe White-Hoffman adds a solvent to the white lines, while Andrew Trihaft runs a power washer over the artificial turf to eliminate the lacrosse markings.

Lines for soccer will be added soon because ONU will host 10 soccer camps and clinics this summer.

Came from Columbus to watch Boston

Three golden retrievers from Idaho and Columbus, Ohio, attended the final rehearsal of the Boston Crusaders. The well-behaved puppies enjoyed all of the action and sounds but couldn’t convince Jeff and Joy Good to stay in Ada until Saturday for the official opening of the Ada Dog Park. ...and all of this has a local connection

A tide pool with shrimp

By Monty Siekerman
Sometimes, almost never, you find what might look like a flying shrimp in the most unlikely place...and all of this has a local connection.

Judith Greavu, ONU art professor emerita, sculpted “Tide Pool with Shrimp” a bronze and fused glass creation on display in Lakeland, Fla., now through the end of the year.

Admiring the winning artwork in Florida is Ada Icon Editor Monty Siekerman. Judith’s sculpture was one of 10 pieces selected from 65 proposals submitted to be displayed along Lemon Street in the heart of downtown Lakeland. She retired after teaching sculpture at Ohio Northern for 20 years.
