Architects to speak Feb. 20

Two architects will speak on "Emerging Professional” at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 in the Freed Center. The talk, which is part of the T.J. Smull College of Engineering Spotts Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.

 Both speakers are with BHDP Architecture, which has offices in Columbus, Cincinnati and Raleigh, N.C.

Things you didn’t know about your own hometown

1895 the first operation of appendicitis was performed in Ada.  

Feb. 25, 1903 the First National Bank had an adding machine.

February 1910 a humane society was formed in Ada with night policeman Jamison as temporary Humane Officer.

February 1918 the Ohio Northern Service flag, World War 1, containing 225 names was unfurled during a special chapel service.

Richards gains OAC honor...again

The junior had another record breaking week for the Polar Bears (44-8 overall).

She competed in the Grand Valley State (Mich.) Big Meet on Friday afternoon in Allendale, Mich.

Richards posted the sixth fastest time in Div. III history in the 1-mile run and finished second overall and was the first collegiate athlete to cross the finish line in a race that featured schools from Div. I, II and III. 

Richards finished second overall in 4:47.26 in the meet and also shattered the previous Ohio Northern school record held by former Polar Bear Alison Steinbrunner by over 11 seconds.

Here’s the chocolate bake-off winners

Melia Santillanez and Elsie Allen won first place in this year’s Ada Public Library chocolate bake-off. They entered a Texas sheet cake and won one-pound of Dietsch’s chocolate.

Ada swimmer Katayama wins sectional crown

LIMA - Ada freshman swimmer Klava Katayama qualified for districts by finishing in the top two in a pair of freestyle events at the 14-team Div. II Lima sectionals held Saturday in the YMCA.

She will now swim at the Bowling Green districts Feb. 17-18 for a chance to advance to the state meet Feb. 22-25 at Canton.

Katayama won the 50 freestyle race and took second in the overall 100 freestyle sectional standings to pace Ada. 

Several other Bulldogs qualified for the BG district meet next weekend. Junior Zach Beaschler, and seniors Andrew Ross and Andrew Robey each qualified in two individual events as well as part of two relays.

Impressionistic water colors?

Not exactly, say Ken Collins, who took these two photos. The "water" part is accurate. This is a reflection of nearby objects in the water of the ONU pond. One is the photo right-side up, the other upside down.
