Five spelling bee finalists spell it out Friday morning

At first there were 15.

After nine rounds and 80 words there were only five standing in the Ada elementary and junior high spelling bee held March 13. The bee concludes on March 14.

After using all of the words in this year's competition, the bee stopped and five contestants remained. The five finalists are Kade Cortez, eighth grade; Luci Wall, fourth grade; Riley Ferguson, fourth grade; Nathan Hurtig, sixth grade and Olivia Reed, sixth grade.

On March 14 the five will be presented new words and a first, second and third place winner will be named.

Donald Zimmerly was a 1952 Ada High School graduate

Donavin D. "Don" Zimmerly, 79, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 2:10 a.m. at his residence in Ada.

He was born on April 1, 1934 in Lima, Ohio to Glenn L. and Helen J. (Allstetter) Zimmerly and they preceded him in death. On September 20, 1953 he married Dorothy L. Jump and she survives in Ada.

ONU multicultural fair, March 28

Ohio Northern University will hold its annual Multicultural Fair in the McIntosh Center Activities Room on Friday, March 28, at 5 p.m. This event is a collaboration of ONU’s International Services, ONU Student Senate and seven multicultural student organizations.

Additionally, international students from Bluffton University, the University of Findlay, the University of Toledo and Tiffin University have been invited to attend and participate. The event is free and open to the public.

Betty Wirt operated the "Cubby Hole" in Ada

Betty Kathryn Wirt, 87, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 9:05 p.m. at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton.

She was born on April 2, 1926 in Pittsburgh, Pa., to William and Elizabeth (Hasson) Knox and they preceded her in death. On May 15, 1946 she married Merle E. Wirt and he died on November 1, 2010.

Coming soon to an observatory near you (ONU) - "Asteroids and Occultations"

Several events are scheduled at the Ohio Northern University observatory this spring.

On Friday, March 21, from 8 to 10 p.m. is a public event titled " "Asteroids and Occultations."

The observatory website notes that on the morning of Tuesday, April 15, there will be a total lunar eclipse. No observatory event is planned because of the late hour. Totality begins around 3:06 a.m. EDT and continues until 4:24 EDT. It should be a beautiful sight, with Saturn, Mars and Spica all within 23 degrees of the Moon.

• Friday, April 18,  9-11 p.m.. - Public Event.  "Mars near opposition."
