Assistance for Ada families in need during the holidays

This year’s “Blessings for Christmas” program gets underway this month.

The program offers assistance to Ada school district families in need during the holidays, according to Gwen Jochims, program coordinator.

Individuals, families, organizations and businesses interested in sponsoring a family contact Jochims at [email protected] for details.

Sign-up schedule for families needing assistance follows:
• Tuesday, Oct. 11 – 4 to 6 p.m.
• Tuesday, Oct. 18 – 4 to 6 p.m.
• Saturday, Oct. 29 – 10 a.m. to noon

Tutoring by ONU students starts next week at ReStore

A new after-school tutoring program called Polar PALS, devoted to reading enrichment for first through sixth graders will launch next week.

Tutoring, provided by ONU college students, will take place at the ReStore Community Center, 210 N. Main St, Ada, from 3:30-5 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday afternoons throughout the fall semester, according to Ann Johnson,
assistant professor of psychology at ONU.

"We hope to start the program on Wednesday, Oct. 12," she added.

As part of this new opportunity, a college student tutor will be paired with each child to work on the development of reading skills via the Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies curriculum.

From 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at CHP

A LuLaRoe fundraiser for Amelia Griffin who is battling cancer, takes place from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Ada Community Health Professionals (Visiting Nurses) building, 1200 S. Main St., Ada, according to Keri Kozlowsko.

A portion of the sales will be donated to Amelia's family to help out with cancer treatment expenses.

Offer provides very affordable advertising for one-time events

To better serve non-profit organizations, clubs, school groups and church groups, The Icon has created a $25 special offer.

Any non-profit group may advertise a special one-time event such as:

The cost for a one-week display ad (8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper, often a flyer created by the organization) is only $25. That flyer will be posted in both Bluffton Icon and Ada Icon.

The Ohio Northern men's soccer team continued moving upward in the D3Soccer.com poll as it jumped two spots to No. 4 in the national poll.

Northern (11-0-1) is coming off of a 2-0-0 week in which it posted consecutive shutouts over Defiance and Ohio Athletic Conference-foe Mount Union.

Chicago (Ill.) took over the top spot with 980 points and 12 first place votes, Trinity (Tex.) moved to No. 2 with 950 points and four first place votes, and Rowan (N.J.) fell to No. 3 with 920 points and three first place votes.

Northern has now been nationally-ranked for six consecutive years and 10 times in the last 11 seasons.
