Four women and a phone - once upon a time in Ada

The Icon needs some help from viewers concerning this photo. It's from the historic photo collection at the Ada Public Library. All we know are the names of the women.

They are from left, Bessie Lamb, Z. Lavernne Daring, Lena Sousley, Gladys Welsh  (names typed as spelled on document.)

The question is, what's the story behind the photo?

Our best guess - and it's only a guess - is an Ada fundraiser, membership drive, voter drive, war bond drive. There a telephone in the photo and some serious focusing on lists. And, what year would you place on this photo?

Here's Nickel Plate Road Berkshire 759 pulling out of the former Lima Locomotive Works in the spring of 1969. Although NKP 759 never passed through Ada, similar steam locomotives were familiar passing through Ada on a daily basis during the era of steam.

The locomotive, built in Lima in 1949, was pulling the Golden Spike Limited. The train was headed to Utah where the centennial of the Golden Spike was to take place. The train headed south and passed through Bluffton.

Think I'll go down to King Lumber and get some nails

Icon viewers will have to be senior citizens to remember this scene in Ada. It's the King Lumber Co., which later became Steinman Brothers Lumber. The photo was taken in 1953.

King Lumber handled lumber supplies, mill work, builders' supplies, paint and hardware. The owner was W.E. King.

Can you place the location of this photo? It's now the parking lot behind the village building. Jon Umphress provide this photo and information to The Icon.
