Historical Ada

Want Ada history? You'll find it on the shelves of the public library

By Sarah Bender, Ada Icon summer intern

Nestled into the corner of the Ada Public Library is an impressive collection of material related to local history, which spans as far back as Ada’s founding in 1853.

This area of the library gives visitors interested in history and genealogy a relaxed area to learn more about the town of Ada as well as other areas of Hardin County. Preserved in filing cabinets, which are open to the public are photographs of individual Ada residents, area businesses, early photos of Ohio Northern University, and town activities and celebrations past and present.

Banking in Ada 90 years ago

There's lots going on in this photo of First National Bank, Ada. The photo was taken in 1923 or 1924. Note the "Join the Harding Memorial Association - here now" homemade sign. President Warren G. Harding, the 29th U.S. president, and Marion native, died Aug. 2, 1923.

Notice the ornate teller's window and the hot water heating system. Was Tim Tighe a customer who just happened to be in the bank when the photo was taken? Or, was he a shareholder? And how about the man on the very far left, partically cut off in the photo?
