Send Silence Packing exhibit mental health conversation starter

The Send Silence Packing national traveling exhibit featuring stories from individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23 on the campus of Ohio Northern University.

Passersby are invited to walk among the Send Silence Packing backpacks to see the photographs and read the stories attached to them. Many of the backpacks were donated by families who lost a loved one to suicide.

The exhibit’s rain location will be in the McIntosh Center’s Mactivities Room.

Ada enjoys festive day hosted by Ada Area Chamber

On September 18, visitors to Ada enjoyed perhaps the largest Harvest and Herb festival in its 35-year history, according to Ada Area Chamber of Commerce director Deb Curlis.

With booths and food trucks stretching from North Avenue to the Ohio Northern campus, visitors shopped, ate, and celebrated the harvest season.

The Ada-Liberty Township Fire Department made a breath-taking American flag display at Main and Buckeye. First responders also made a presentation at the depot commemorating September 11, sharing their personal experiences of that day and enouraging audience members to join them in preparing for emergencies and serving their community.

35th Annual Harvest and Herb Festival Schedule

The 35th annual Harvest and Herb Festival on Saturday, September 18 is expected to include more craft and food vendors than ever before, according to Deb Curlis, director of the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce.

The festival will begin setting up at 6 a.m. when Main Street will close to traffic.

9 a.m., Vendors open for business 

10 a.m., Festival parade with some 110 units including the Findlay Corvette Club

Noon, Opening ceremonies including the crowning of the Harvest and Herb Festival Queen

4 p.m., Festival closes

September 22 Glow 5K Run/Walk

UPDATE: This event has been postponed due to storms forecast. It will be rescheduled.

Ohio Northern University will host a Glow 5K Run/Walk on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m. The route will begin at ONU’s King Horn Sports Center and take participants along the Green Monster trail and the tundra through the middle of campus.

Glow sticks and other items will be provided for this twilight run/walk that seeks to raise awareness about suicide prevention and mental health services.

Sept. 18 Ada Athletic Boosters cornhole tournament

On September 18, during the Harvest and Herb Festival, the Ada Athletic Boosters will be holding a cornhole tournament for all ages at the Ada Train Depot, 9 Central Ave.

The tournament begins at noon with check-in from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Entry fees are $20 for a student team of 2 (Ada or ONU students) and $40 for an adult team of 2.

The tournament is double elimination. Games to 21 with no bust. 1st place winners will receive 25% of the total entry fees and a trophy.

Multiple raffle baskets will be available at the event. All proceeds go to supporting student athletes and athletic programs. Ada VFW Post 9381 is the tournament sponsor.

Bluffton College Fair September 8

Bluffton University will host a College Fair including Ohio Northern University from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, in Sommer Center. Representatives from more than 30 colleges and universities from Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky will be on campus.

The current list of schools attending is listed on the registration page. Registration is appreciated but not required and walk-ins are welcome.

Tours of Bluffton’s campus will be offered to families who are interested.
