"Ashfall" author visits Ada High School

Author of the popular young adult book "Ashfall,"  Mike Mullin, will speak at Ada High School  on Tuesday, Oct. 16, during Teen Read Week.

According to Chanda Smith, high school media specialist, Mullin will speak in a high school assembly at 8:45 a.m. He will also visit with students in a high school science class.

Mullin wrote his first novel in elementary school and has been writing more or less non-stop ever since. "Ashfall" is his first published novel. He holds a black belt in Songahm Taekwondo. He lives in Indianapolis.

It's "cash mob" day in Ada - here's the details

The secret’s out. The Buy Ada First Committee, planning the community’s first-ever cash mob, this week announced the location of the event.

The cash mob takes place at one of Ada’s most prominent retail businesses, Reichert’s, 111-113 S. Main St., from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16.

“Fred Reichert welcomed our invitation to host this first-ever event of its kind in Ada,” said Heather Cox, member of the committee. “We hope this will be the first of several more cash mobs held in Ada during the next 12 months.”

Veterans' breakfast at Ada cafeteria on Nov. 12

The Ada School District is sponsoring a veterans' breakfast on Monday, Nov. 12, at 8 a.m. in the school cafeteria. The school invites all veterans and their families, as well as active duty service personnel who live, work or worship within the boundaries of the Ada Exempted
Village Schools to attend. Widows or widowers of veterans are also encouraged to attend.

Kiwanis Club spaghetti dinner Nov. 15

The Ada Kiwanis Club 2012 spaghetti dinner is from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Ada VFW, 2147 State Route 235, Ada.

The menu includes:

• Spaghetti
• Salad
• Garlic bread

Tickets are $6 per person with children 10 and under no charge. Tickets may be purchased from any Kiwanis member or at the door.

Ada Kiwanis Halloween parade Oct. 29 - judging categories include: Prettiest, Scariest and Most Original

The Ada Kiwanis Halloween parade details were announced today. This year’s parade is Monday, Oct. 29, behind the Municipal Building on Buckeye Street. Registration begins at 5:15 p.m. and the parade at 6 p.m.

Costume categories are:
• Prettiest
• Scariest
• Most original

Costume judging by age groups follow:
• Preschool and kindergarten
• First and second grades
• Third and fourth grades
• Fifth and sixth grades
• Groups – any age and pets
• Adults (most original only)
• Ada band

Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" Ada Public Library's November book discussion

The Ada Public Library invites Icon viewers to join its November book discussion. The group meets at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the library to discuss Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights."

Brief synopsis:

In the late winter months of 1801, a man named Lockwood rents a manor house called Thrushcross Grange in the isolated moor country of England. Here, he meets his dour landlord, Heathcliff, a wealthy man who lives in the ancient manor of Wuthering Heights, four miles away from the Grange.
