Ada’s Bassitt 2nd team all-state in softball

AHS senior-to-be pitched, hit and ran the Lady Bulldogs to a program record 18 wins. She batted .507 and authored a 17-4 record hurling with an 0.92 ERA.

ADA __ Ada High School junior pitcher and leadoff hitter Jenna Bassitt was tabbed second team all-state for Div. IV softball in voting conducted by coaches.

Bassitt was recognized at the all-state banquet in Columbus Monday, June 17.

She posted a 17-4 pitching record with an earned run average of 0.92 this past spring. On offense, she also led the team in batting average (.507), on base pct. (.580), runs scored (33), hits (38) and stolen bases (32).

Her OPS (on base plus slugging) was 1.380, and her slugging pct. was .800.

She hit five doubles, four triples, three home runs and 26 singles. She also drove in 19 runs from the leadoff spot.

HARDIN COUNTY__Weather conditions have helped Ohio wheat fields mature a little early this year – but these same conditions can lead to an increase in fires to combine harvesters and crop fields. Unintentional fires are never an enjoyable event. Two recommendations to prevent injuries and property damage include preventative maintenance and pre-planning for fire emergencies.

Ronald Nelson worked for Rockwell Arvin Meritor

Ronald W. Nelson, Sr., age 77, of Ada, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 9:33 AM at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima, surrounded by his family.  

He was born on October 5, 1946, in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Phineas M. and Maxine (Piles) Dumond.  On April 4, 1968, Ronald married Patricia A. Hensley and she survives in Ada. 

Also surviving are his four children: Ronald (Lanora) Nelson, Jr. of Ada, Jon (Jennifer) Nelson of Ada, Leslie (Frank) Talarico of Ft. Wayne, IN and Sandy Piehl of Westminster; twelve grandchildren; and a sister, Susan Eisel of Tennessee. 

Ronald was preceded in death by his two children: Tonya Wright and Gerald Hastings; and sister, Betty Dumond.

Sweet tooth: Sugar substitutes and your heart

The idiom “sweet tooth” describes an individual who craves chocolate, candies, cake, cookies or sweet desserts. Healthcare professionals including dentists warn of the dangers of too much sugar. These include heart disease, obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. An option to reduce sugar intake is a sugar substitute. 

In 1963, the FDA approved the sugar substitute xylitol as a food additive to help patients with diabetes. Xylitol has been approved in 35 countries as a replacement for sugar. Xylitol is a 5-carbon sugar alcohol found naturally in small quantities in fruits and vegetables. When xylitol is used to enhance the sweetness of food, the levels can be 1000-fold higher than those found in nature.
