Rich Bensman named assistant men's basketball coach at ONU

Rich Bensman has been named an assistant men's basketball coach at Ohio Northern University.

Bensman comes to ONU after a highly successful prep basketball coaching career, where he won 296 games and an Ohio High School Athletic Association State Championship in 18 seasons at the helm at Cincinnati Reading High School.

He was named the Cincinnati Hills Conference Coach of the Year in 2011, 2003 and 2002 and was named the Ohio Public High School Coach of the Year in 2003 when he guided Reading to a 22-3 record and the state title.

Bensman has a bachelor's degree in communication arts from the University of Cincinnati.

Zumberger posted her first double-double

Senior Kelsie Zumberger posted her first double-double of the season, as the Ohio Northern volleyball team defeated Baldwin Wallace by a 25-17, 25-13, 25-17 score Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears are now 18-4 overall and 2-1 in OAC play while the Yellow Jackets fall to 9-14, 1-2.

Zumberger finished with 31 assists and 10 digs.

Freshman Ellie Gillespie led Northern with 15 kills.

The Polar Bears also had five players notch double digits in digs.

Junior Jeni Kmic led the way with 13, while freshman Heather Saunier had 12.

ONU drops 22-20 heartbreaker to Baldwin-Wallace

Senior Tate Humphrey scored on a 2-yard run with 27 seconds left, but his 2-point conversion pass fell incomplete and No. 24 Baldwin Wallace held on for a thrilling 22-20 football victory over Ohio Northern on a muddy Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

The Polar Bears fall to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 4-1, 3-1.

Humphrey's run capped a 10-play, 60-yard drive that saw ONU close a 22-14 deficit to 22-20.

No. 20 Women's Soccer falls on road to Baldwin Wallace, 1-0

The No. 20 Ohio Northern women's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 defeate on the road to Baldwin Wallace Satuday evening at Geroge Finne Stadium Saturday evening.

The Yellow Jackets are now 8-2-3 overall and 2-1 in OAC play, while the Polar Bears fall to 6-2-3 on the year and 1-2 in the OAC.

BW got on the board at the 23:51 mark in the first period, when Cheryl Bell knocked in her fifth goal of the season.

Northern had a shot to knot things up at the 55:21 mark, but junior Abbie Schauble's shot hit the cross bar.

ONU was on the attack in the second half, firing six shots on goal, but could not get one in the net.

Quintrell's career-low 73 sparks Men's Golf to sixth place finish at Wittenberg Fall Invitational

Sophomore Andrew Quintrell fired career-low 73 in the first round to spark the Ohio Northern men's golf team to a sixth place finish at the Wittenberg Fall Invitational Saturday and Sunday at the Springfield Country Club.

The Polar Bears (29-9-1) tied for sixth place out of 15 teams with a 36-hole score of 308-305—613.

Junior Colin Burns finished sixth out of 93 golfers with a 2-over par 74-72—146.

Junior Ryan Wirtz tied for 44th with an 80-76—156, Quintrell tied for 49th with a 73-84—157, freshman Brandon Lambert tied for 73rd with an 81-81—162 and freshman Rick Deichert tied for 80th with an 89-76—165.
