Bulldog boys basketball stings Hornets with hot 3rd period

By Cort Reynolds

ADA – The Ada High School boys basketball team used a 26-point third period outburst to defeat local non-league opponent Cory-Rawson 57-38 on the afternoon of December 21, and post their fourth consecutive victory.

Playing their third game in five days, Ada led the winless but feisty Hornets just 20-19 at intermission following a sluggish first half.

But the Bulldogs outscored the upset-minded Hornets 26-10 in the third period to build a comfortable 46-29 cushion. Ada also captured the fourth quarter 11-9 to win going away by 19.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-2 overall with the home win. C-R fell to 0-7 after the defeat.

“We played well in the third quarter,” said veteran Ada head coach Chris Sautter. “We weren’t focused to start the game. Give the kids credit, they pushed the lead to double digits pretty quickly in the third.

“It was nice to have a home game,” he added.

CONTINENTAL – The visiting Ada High School girls basketball team used a second quarter explosion to whip non-conference foe Continental 52-16 and earn their first win of the season on the afternoon of December 21.

The Bulldogs led 12-8 after the first period. But they poured in 26 second-period points to grab a 38-12 lead at halftime, and cruised to the victory.

The convincing win improved the Bulldog record to 1-7 overall. The Pirate girls dropped to 1-8 after the blowout defeat.

“The girls played well from the start,” said Ada third-year head coach Zach Ricker. “We shot well.”

“It was good for the girls and to build their confidence,” he said of getting the first victory.

Bulldog boys basketball stifles Royals

By Cort Reynolds

BLOOMDALE – The visiting Ada High School boys basketball team stymied Blanchard Valley Conference rival Elmwood 45-33 on Friday, December 20 to remain undefeated in their new league.

Ada led 11-9 after the first period, and remained ahead 18-17 at intermission following a low-scoring first half.

The Bulldogs outscored the Royals 27-16 in the second half. Ada won the third period 14-8, and took the fourth quarter 13-8.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-2 overall with the road win to stay unbeaten at 3-0 in the BVC. Elmwood, coached by Ada alumnus Ty Traxler, fell to 1-3 and 1-2 in BVC play after the defeat.

“It was just another gritty, hard-fought road win,” said veteran Ada head coach Chris Sautter. “We saw a junk defense (triangle and two), and it took a little while to settle in. But the kids adjusted and made some plays down the stretch to pull away.
