Bulldog baseball downed at Vikings

By Cort Reynolds

LEIPSIC–The Ada High School baseball team jumped ahead early but lost 8-4 to Leipsic in a Northwest Conference contest Wednesday evening, May 3.

The Bulldog boys fell to 4-12 overall and 0-7 in the NWC with the defeat. Leipsic improved to 7-9 overall and 2-6 in the NWC after the victory.

“We played well enough to win but made four errors that cost us five unearned runs,” said Ada head coach Toby Smith.  “If we can clean it up down the stretch, we will be a tough out in the tournament.”

Ada raced to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior Jacob Sutherly and sophomore Levi Green hit consecutive one-out singles.

Bulldog starting pitcher Roman Snyder slugged a two-run double to put the visitors on top, 2-0.

With two outs, Dalton Amos then delivered a run-scoring single to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Vikings tied it with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. After an Ada leadoff error, Adam Lammers legged out an RBI triple to center field that plated the first Leipsic run.

A walk and two singles brought in the tying runs to knot the score at 3-3 after two frames.

Ada struck out five times in the next two innings. Leipsic then broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Singles by Luke Spoors and Jeremy Tavarez preceded a two-run double off the bat of Ethan Zeisloft. A walk and an error put the Vikings on top, 6-3.

Trent Siefker then stroked another two-RBI double to stretch the margin to 8-3.

Singles by Levi Sousley and Max Puerto in the Ada fifth were followed by a  Sutherly walk. Puerto stole a base and scored to make it 8-4.

Snyder later singled, but the threat ended on a groundout to the pitcher.

Sousley and Spencer Wall then shut out the Vikings with two innings of shutout relief.

Tommy Offenbacher struck out the side in the Ada sixth.

Ada put together a Puerto single and a Sutherly walk in the seventh to muster a one-out threat. But Offenbacher recorded the last two outs to finish a complete-game win.

Offenbacher scattered nine hits and hurled all seven innings to get the victory. He struck out 11, walked two and gave up four earned runs.

Leadoff hitter Puerto smacked three singles and scored a run. Snyder amassed two hits, two RBI and scored a run.

Sutherly singled, scored a run and walked twice. Green singled and scored a run. Amos contributed an RBI hit.

Lammers had two hits, two runs and two RBI. Siefker drove in three runs with two doubles. Spoors compiled two hits and a run. Tavarez singled and scored.

The Vikings out-hit Ada, 12-9.

Leipsic left 10 runners on base to six stranded by Ada.

The Bulldogs committed four costly errors, while the Vikings made no miscues.

Ada (0-7 NWC) visits Spencerville (1-15, 1-5 NWC) in the Bulldog league finale Thursday.
