The Ada High School baseball team led early but lost a 13-6 seesaw slugfest to Allen East in a Northwest Conference makeup game Wednesday evening, April 19, at War Memorial Park.
Ada fell to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in the NWC with the defeat. AE improved to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the NWC after the win.
“When we take the lead the most important inning is the inning after you score,” said Ada head coach Toby Smith. “We needed to hold them defensively, and we did not do that.”
The Bulldogs led 2-0 after the first inning, but AE went ahead 4-2 after three. Ada regained a 6-4 edge with a four-run fourth frame.
But the Mustangs plated five runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to win by seven.
Mustang leadoff batter Carson Clum smacked five hits, scored three runs and drove in a run to ignite the AE offense. Braylen Kennedy doubled, hit two singles and drove in four runs while scoring twice.
AE’s Levi Clum compiled two hits and three RBI. Jackson Thompson hit a double, singled and amassed two RBI. Keaton Miller collected two hits for the Mustangs.
Roman Snyder led Ada with three hits and one RBI, including one double. Spencer Wall doubled, hit a single and drove home two runs.
Jacob Sutherly and Levi Green each contributed an RBI hit. Dalton Amos and Max Puerto added singles for Ada.
Sutherly and Green each walked in the bottom of the first, and both came around to score on Wall’s two-run single that gave Ada the early lead.
In the AE second, Caden Hedrick hit a two-out single and advanced on an error and passed ball. Levi Clum then singled him home to cut the Bulldog lead to 2-1.
In the top of the third, Clum hit a leadoff single and scored the tying run. Jacob Hershberger singled and also sped home on a Thompson double to put AE in front, 3-2.
In the home fourth, Ada erupted for four two-out runs to regain the lead.
Levi Sousley walked and Puerto singled. Sutherly followed with an RBI single. He then moved up on a steal and a passed ball.
Green singled home the go-ahead run, and Snyder ripped a double to put the Bulldogs back on top, 6-4.
In the top of the fifth Kennedy led off with a single, followed by a Thompson single and stolen base.
Donovan Kennedy hit a single as AE inched within 6-5.
Dalton Amos hit a leadoff single in the Ada fifth and stole second base, but was stranded there after two strikeouts.
AE recaptured the lead for good with a five-run sixth inning on four hits to forge ahead, 10-6. Clum, Hershberger and Kennedy each stroked consecutive one-out singles, followed by a walk to Thompson.
An Ada error and a two-run single from Levi Clum extended the Mustang lead to four runs.
AE hurler Donovan Kennedy struck out the side in the Ada sixth.
In the top of the seventh, Mustang Brady Brooks led off with a single. Clum then swatted his fifth single, and Hershberger was hit by a pitch.
Braylen Kennedy then unloaded a three-run double to clear the bases and stretch the margin to 13-6.
Snyder hit a single to lead off the Ada seventh. But Kennedy induced a groundout and got two strikeouts to end the game with a flourish.
Kennedy struck out 12 and walked three. He scattered nine Ada hits and allowed six earned runs to earn the complete-game win.
Sousley started for Ada and gave up 12 hits with five earned runs over five innings. AE touched up the Ada relievers for eight runs, four of which were earned, in the last two frames.
