Healthwise: Scurvy and Vitamin C

Scurvy is usually associated with pirates since sailors were susceptible to scurvy.  In a January 10, 2022 article published in the Military Health System news, author Janet A. Aker reports 2 million sailors died of scurvy between the 16th and 18th centuries.  Historians have documented scurvy as causing most suffering throughout history related to vitamin deficiencies.

Bulldog golfers 9th at DIII sectionals

ARLINGTON – The Ada High School boys golf team finished ninth out of 13 teams in the Div. III sectional tournament at Sycamore Springs Golf Course Thursday, September 26.

Blanchard Valley Conference champion Van Buren won the sectional team championship easily with 301 strokes. Carey was a distant second at 350 strokes, followed by Arcadia (358).

The top three teams made it to districts, along with the top three individuals not on qualifying teams.

Champion VB took the top three spots, as freshman Jacob Schroeder captured tournament medalist honors with a 32-36=68 round.

Ada volleyball sweeps Wildcats

DELPHOS – Playing their third match in four nights, the visiting Ada High School volleyball team swept non-conference foe Delphos Jefferson on Thursday, September 26.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-8 overall after the 25-15, 25-20, 25-14 road win which snapped a three-match losing skid.

DJ fell to 4-13 after the defeat.

Senior Tess Griffith hustled up 12 digs, hit seven kills and served up six aces to pace the victors. 

Sophomore Dailah Preston drilled six kills, while junior Anna Conley came up with six blocks. Sophomore Alivia Gibson knocked down five kills.

Ada football defeats Redskins

ARCADIA – The visiting Ada High School football team scored 22 unanswered points in the second half to defeat Blanchard Valley Conference foe Arcadia soundly 36-6 on a rare Thursday night game, September 26.

Ada led just 14-6 at halftime, but senior quarterback Levi Green passed for two touchdowns to help the visitors pull away after intermission.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the BVC after earning their third consecutive win. The Redskins fell to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the BVC with the one-sided defeat. 

ONU Homecoming 2024 is Sept. 27-28

Ohio Northern University is celebrating Homecoming 2024 on Friday-Saturday, September 27-28. Polar Bears are invited back to campus Homecoming and Reunion Weekend activities including a Golden Years alumni luncheon, 50th reunion for the Class of 1974, Homecoming parade, Affinity gatherings, Athletic events. Dr. Robert W. McCurdy was Assistant Dean of Pharmacy

Dr. Robert W. McCurdy, age 82, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay.

He was born on July 29, 1942 in Akron, Ohio to Robert B. and Louise A. (Hanan) McCurdy who preceded him in death. On August 6, 1966 he married Myrna W. Woodward and she survives in Bluffton.
