Four score in ONU win over Defiance

The No. 4 Ohio Northern men's soccer team continued their great start to the season as they defeated Defiance College 5-1 in the opening match of the ONU Invitational at the ONU Soccer Field Friday afternoon.

Ohio Northern advances to 4-0-0 on the season while the Yellow Jackets of Defiance fall to     0-3-0.

The Polar Bears got off to a quick start as seniors Josh Green and Nate Bascom got touches on the ball before a pass to senior Cameron Johnson resulted in Johnson's fourth goal of the season in the 3rd minute of the game.

Women's tennis kicks off fall season with pair of victories

The Ohio Northern women's tennis team began their season with an 8-1 victory over St. Francis (Ind.) and 9-0 win over area foe Defiance Thursday afternoon at the University Courts.

The Polar Bears are now 2-0 on the season.

St. Francis falls to 3-2 on the year while Defiance is now 0-1.

Against St. Francis, Northern started the match by sweeping all three doubles courts.

English professor’s work to appear in ‘Best New Poets 2012’

 

“As a Debutante I Adjusted My Hatpin,” a poem by Dr. Jennifer Moore, Ohio Northern University assistant professor of creative writing, has been selected to appear in “Best New Poets 2012,” which will be published this November.

“Best New Poets” is published annually by the University of Virginia Press to highlight the work of emerging poets. It is sponsored by Meridian, the University of Virginia’s literary magazine.

Not your typical college sophomore

Amanda Fincher, 2011 Ada High School graduate, is on her way to Turkey. She has received a tuition-paid scholarship to study medicine in Ankara, Turkey. Her classes start Sept. 24.

Harvest and Herb Fest' on Ada's calendar for Sept. 15

For 27 years, the Harvest and Herb Festival has brought people from all over Ohio and even outside of the state to pack Main Street in Ada. With over 130 booths lining the street, a parade, and plenty of entertainment this year, there is something for everyone at this year's festival, which is Saturday, Sept. 15.

The festival is put on by the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce and headed by Jeff and Deb Oestreich, Anna Poling, Scott and Arlene Allison, and JoNell Hanratty.

Amanda Fincher on her way to medical school in Turkey

In May 2011 Amanda Fincher received her Ada High School diploma. Her hopes were set a medical career in dentistry.

Sixteen months after high school, as she puts it, “my life turned upside down,” as she learned late last week that she was accepted into medical school in Turkey.

This weekend she is on her way to Turkey, where she will enroll as one of 25 students accepted into the English medicine program at Yildirim Beyazit University in Ankara.
