Ada Science Fair: From bubblegum to basketballs

The Ada Middle School hosted a Science Fair on January 20 that featured the work of 66 students who completed science projects.  All but one were 7th graders. One 8th grader also participated, building on her project from 2021.

7th-8th grade science teacher Alayne Schrock provided the Icon with the following details.

Fourteen students qualified for the virtual District 6 Science Day hosted by Ohio Northern University on March 26 by receiving a superior rating on their project.

Students could focus on the scientific method or the engineering design process. About one-third of the students completed an engineering design project and two-thirds completed projects using the scientific method. Biology, physics and chemistry were represented in the science fair.

Students began looking for a project in mid-November. Over the next months, they researched their topic, conducted their experiment or built a prototype, wrote a lab report, and created a poster display.  While research and lab reports were worked on during class time, data collection was completed at home.

Schrock also noted, “We couldn't put on the science fair without the help of the Ada community. Community members along with ONU staff and students, and Ada staff members volunteered to judge the projects prior to the fair opening to the public.”

The Icon found students ready and willing to provide details about their projects, which featured many common household items–from bubblegum to basketballs–viewed through a design or scientific lens.
