Ohio Northern junior and Ada High School volleyball standout Melina Woods was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Woman Player of the Week for the week of April 1-7.
Woods hit .441 with 56 kills and only five errors as the Polar Bears went 3-1 last week with a sweep of Capital and a split at then-No. 12 Otterbein.
Woods is the 12th Ohio Northern player to be named the Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week and the first since Liz Schnelle, who was a five-time Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week honoree.
The Polar Bears finished their season with a 13-3 record under first-year head coach Katie Kuhn.
Woods overview: Melina is in her first season at Ohio Northern after transferring from Canisius ... In two seasons as a right side hitter at CC, Woods had 326 kills, 40 aces, 54 blocks, 178 digs and hit .216 ... Had two double-doubles and had 12 double-digit kill matches ... She played in 43 matches with 36 starts.
Sophomore Year (2019): Played in the first 14 matches of the season, starting seven ... Had a career-high 16 kills, 11 digs and 2 blocks in a 5-set victory over Nevada on 8/30/19 ... Also had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs at Buffalo on 9/21/2019 ... Had 84 kills, 10 blocks and 68 digs and hit .117 on the season.
Freshman Year (2018): Started all 29 matches for the Griffins ... Was third on the team with 242 kills, second with 33 aces and was fourth on the team with 44 blocks ... She hit .244 for the season ... Had double-digit kills in 10 matches, including a season-best 15 kills in a sweep at Rider on 10/13/2018.
