Bulldog softball, baseball and track teams in action

Ada goes 1-1 vs. McComb • Boys and girls 2nd in quad meet

By Cort Reynolds
McCOMB - Visiting Ada whipped McComb 9-3 in non-league softball action Tuesday on an unseasonably warm evening.

Ada improved to 2-1 this season with the convincing win, while the Lady Panthers dropped to 1-5 with the defeat.

Senior Leona Dalton pitched a complete game and socked a home run, her third of the season, to lead the Lady Bulldogs to victory. She also drove in three runs.

"We did what we needed to do by putting the ball in play and reducing our errors to one," said Ada head coach Rebecca Dicke. "Dalton threw a wonderful game with 11 strikeouts and no walks."

Dalton slugged a two-run homer in the first inning to put the visitors on top early, and they never trailed.

The Bulldogs plated two runs in each of the first, third, fifth and sixth innings. They added one run in the seventh before leaving the bases loaded.

McComb scored all three of its runs in the third inning to inch within 4-3. But Ada responded with five unanswered runs to win going away.

Bulldog senior shortstop Brenna George and classmate Kiersten Cortez both batted 3-4 with an RBI. George and Dalton each doubled in the sixth inning, while Cortez knocked out three singles.

Slugging senior catcher Alexis Waugh smacked two triples and a single. Senior outfielder Tori Green collected two hits in four at bats. Freshman Katie Sizemore and junior Lexi White each added one single.

Dalton struck out 11 Panthers and did not walk a batter in seven innings. She allowed six hits and two earned runs to improve to 2-1 this spring.

"Everybody contributed at the plate," summed up Dicke. "We stranded a few more runners than I would have liked to (10), but we reduced our strikeouts to four," she added.

Ada out-hit McComb, 15-6. Olivia Miehls tripled in a run and singled for the Panther girls. Losing pitcher Chloe Amburgey hit two singles for McComb.

"I just hope to play a solid game against Columbus Grove," said Dicke. "We want to eliminate the errors and get another solid piching effort from Dalton."

The Bulldog girls then host Arlington (0-1) in a non-league doubleheader Saturday.

Ada baseball felled by McComb

Ada dropped to 1-4 with the defeat, while the Panthers improved to 2-3 with the victory.

The Bulldogs trailed 2-0 after one inning. Ada cut the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the top of the fifth.

McComb then put the game out of reach with three runs in the home half of the sixth.

The Panthers out-hit Ada 5-3 in the pitching-oriented contest.

"Monty Sheldon looked very sharp in his mound debut," said head coach Jason Campbell.

Roman Snyder, Jacob Poling and Spencer Wall collected the Bulldog hits.
