Two May weekends for the classes of 2020 and 2021

Ohio Northern University to host in-person commencement ceremonies for Classes of 2021, 2020

Ohio Northern University will host in-person commencement ceremonies in May to honor the Class of 2021 and the Class of 2020, the latter of which had its ceremony postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The events will be held rain or shine at Dial-Roberson Stadium in order to comply with Ohio Department of Health guidelines and to allow graduates to bring guests.

The ceremonies will take place at the following dates and times:

Keeping the community's history alive

A McGuffey history organization will meet at 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 19, at the Freewill Baptist Church, 205 Courtright St., McGuffey.

“The name of our organization is McGuffey Memories for now and we meet monthly. We also have special meetings, as well,” said Marianna Watts, of the group. Persons may contact her at 502-552-0231 for more information.

This year McGuffey celebrating 125 years of becoming a village.  “We are planning fundraisers for events this summer and fall to celebrate,” she said. 

“We are still creating a mission statement, but our goal is to keep the history of McGuffey alive and well. We want the younger generation to know their history.

Served as a pastor for 53 years

Rev. Calvin L. Waugh,  88, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 8:51 a.m. at his residence in Alger.

He was born on Oct. 1, 1932, in Osceola, Iowa, to the late Roy and Nellie (Marquis) Waugh. On Dec. 29, 1956, Calvin married Patricia A. Parson and she survives in Alger.

Calvin was a U.S. Army Veteran who served from 1952 to 1954 stationed in Korea. He was an active pastor for 53 years at York Street and Shiloh Heritage Christian Union Churches, Alger First United Methodist Church, and Hepburn and Otterbein United Methodist Church. 

Jeffrey W. Daniels, 66, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at 2:08 p.m. at his residence in Kenton.

He was born on February 16, 1955, in Alger, Ohio, to the late Rev. John and Thelma (Punches) Daniels, Sr.

Jeffrey was a contractor and owner of J. Daniels Construction Company.  He was a graduate of Upper Scioto Valley High School.  Jeffrey enjoyed loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and mushroom hunting.  He loved all of his grandbabies and spending time with his family and friends.
