'Bears experience non-conference men's soccer loss

Sophomore David Januszand freshman Ben Conkin each scored goals, but Albion (Mich.) edged Ohio Northern 3-2 in a non-conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at rhe Albion Soccer Complex.

The Polar Bears fall to 5-2, while the Britons improve to 2-3.

Northern got on the board first just 10 minutes into the match when Janusz scored off an assist from freshman Chris Garbig and sophomore Austin Horton.

Albion answered with three straight goals, scoring in the 18th, 28th and 34th minutes to go on top 3-1.

Horton pulled ONU within 3-2 off an assist from Conkin in the 42nd minute.

ONU volleyball team hangs tough with number 1 ranked Calvin

The Ohio Northern volleyball team played well in a tight 26-24, 25-23, 25-16 loss to No. 1-ranked Calvin (Mich.) on day two of the Wittenberg Classic Saturday afternoon at the HPER Center.

The Polar Bears fall to 7-4 and are 0-2 in the tournament, while the Knights improve to 10-2 overall and are 1-2 in the tournament.

Freshman Hannah Davis led Ohio Northern with 10 kills on just 23 attempts and a .304 hitting percentage.

Junior Ellie Gillespie had eight kills and a team-high 18 digs, junior Kaitlann Hogrefe had seven kills and sophomore Ashley Borchers dished out 32 assists for ONU.

Calvin was led by Maggie Kamp with 17 kills and Emily Crowe with 11 kills.

Ouch! Women's soccer team lose in double-overtime

The Ohio Northern women's soccer team dropped an exciting, 1-0 double overtime decision at Transylvania (Ky.) at Pat Deacon Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears fall to 3-2-0 on the year while the Pioneers improve their record to 3-3-0 on the season.

In the 102nd minute, Transylvania forward Alyssa Kruse scored the only goal of the game.

Northern out shot the Pioneers 12-7 but couldn't manage to capitalize on their opportunities.

Junior Emily Brodict (3-2) made three saves on the day for ONU.

Morgan Potts (2-3) made six saves at goalkeeper for Transylvania.

ONU women 10th at 24-team cross country meet

Senior Samantha Hoffman led the Ohio Northern women's cross country team to a 10th place finish at the 24-team Calvin (Mich.) Knight Invitational Saturday morning at the Calvin Cross Country Course.

The Polar Bears (22-13 overall) finished with 281 points.

No. 7-ranked Calvin (Mich.) won the team title with 27 points, No. 9 (NAIA) St. Francis (Ill.), No. 22 (NAIA) Aquinas (Mich.) was third with 124 points, No. 34 Case Western Reserve was fourth with 135 points and No. 11 (NAIA) Cornerstone (Ind.) was fifth with 170 points.

Hoffman finished 23rd out of 292 runners in 19:11 over the 5,000-meter course.

ONU men's cross county posts impressive 4th place finish

The Ohio Northern men's cross country team posted an impressive fourth place finish at the Calvin (Mich.) Knight Invitational Saturday morning at the Calvin Cross Country Course.

The Polar Bears (26-3 overall) were fourth out of 20 teams with 118 points.

No. 23 Calvin (Mich.) won the team title with 55 points. No. 5 (NAIA) St. Francis (Ill.) was second with 80 points and No. 4 (NAIA) Aquinas (Mich.) was third with 110 points.

Northern defeated No. 22 (NAIA) Indiana Tech, who finished sixth with 224 points.

Senior Nathan Rosenbaum finished ninth out of 291 runners in 25:51 over the 8,000-meter course.

ONU introduces ‘Brother 2 Brother’ initiative

Ohio Northern University will introduce the “Brother 2 Brother” initiative to the campus with a kickoff event in the Dicke Forum on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m.

Part of the national Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB) program, the Ohio Northern University’s Brother 2 Brother initiative seeks to assist young men, especially young men of color, with retention and graduation within educational environments.
