Red Cross assisting Mt. Cory family following Friday house fire

The American Red Cross of Hancock County is helping a Findlay family and a Mt. Cory family following fires in their homes.

A Findlay family of four received assistance for clothing and seasonal clothing and comfort kits with personal hygiene items following the fire in their Elm St. home on Thursday evening.   Red Cross Disaster Responders Bill Davis and Karl Gingrich responded to the call for help.

Early Friday morning, Red Cross Disaster Responders Pat Swisher and Karl Gingrich answered a call for assistance at a home fire on N. Main St. in Mt. Cory.  After assessing the immediate needs of the resident, assistance for clothing and seasonal clothing was provided.

Six January days had minus zero degree readings

Raise your hand if you thought January 2015 was colder than most Januarys.

There's lot of hands raised out there and you are correct. According to Guy Verhoff, Pandora weather observer, the average January 2015 daily temperature was 21.6 degrees.

The normal January daily temperature is 25.4 degrees.

Even though it was a colder-than-normal January the highs and lows included a 59 degree fluxuation. The high temperature of January was 51 on Jan. 3. The low was seven days later at minus 8. That mark was one of six January days that reached minus zero degrees.

Snowfall for the month included 13.1 inches.

Good Agricultural Practices class Feb. 10 in Mt. Victory

A Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) class has been planned for Hardin County.  GAPs classes are training sessions for fruit and vegetable producers taught by personnel from Ohio State University’s Fruit and Vegetable Safety Program.  The February 10 program will be from 9:00 am-12:00 noon at the Scioto Valley Produce Auction, 18715 County Road 200, Mt. Victory.  The GAPs class is open to all fruit and vegetable producers and will be presented without technology.  Attending an OSU GAPs class does not equate to being ‘GAPs Certified.’

Ada McDonald’s celebrates Mondays with steaming coffee billboard

Drive down Cable Road or Elida Road and what might appear to be a billboard on fire is actually a fresh, steaming cup of coffee — or at least appears to be.

Local McDonald’s franchise, Lewis Family McDonald’s, has recently introduced a new “Free Coffee Mondays” promotion. This limited time promotion offers guests a free small premium roast coffee every Monday with no purchase necessary.

To raise awareness, McDonald’s put up two extended billboards, one on Cable, and one on Elida, with steam rising from the cup of coffee. Travelers were quick to notice the billboards, and at a glance, thought they were on fire, causing them to quickly call the fire department.

Senior Cody Lovejoy leads nation with 17 pins against NCAA Division III competition

Ohio Northern senior All-American Cody Lovejoy leads the nation in falls this season, according to the NCAA Statistics service.

Lovejoy has 17 pins against NCAA Division III competition, the most by any wrestler against his level of competition.

Taylor Walsh of Indiana has 14 pins to lead Division I wrestlers and Evan Rosenborough of Lake Erie leads Division II wrestlers with 10 pins.

Lovejoy is 29-0 with 20 pins against all competition and is ranked No. 1 nationally in Division III's 285-pound weight class.
