Wrestlers remain ranked No. 19 in fifth NWCA Division III Poll; Kwiat and Pawlitz still in individual rankings

The Ohio Northern wrestling team is ranked No. 19 in the fifth weekly Brute-National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll for the 2012-13 season.

The Polar Bears (6-1 overall), under 25th-year head coach Ron Beaschler, one of only two Ohio Athletic Conference teams in the poll, which ranks the top 30 teams in the country.

Northern was ranked No. 19 in the fourth poll, was No. 17 in the third poll, was No. 13 in the second poll and was No. 10 in the first poll.

Individually, two ONU wrestlers are ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes.

Women's basketball moves up to No. 9 in sixth weekly D3Hoops.com poll

The Ohio Northern women's basketball team moved up three more spots to a season-high ranking of No. 9 in the sixth weekly D3hoops.com poll.

The Polar Bears received 412 votes in the poll, 76 more than the 336 they received in last week's poll.

DePauw (Ind.) stayed at the top of the poll with 623 points and 24 of the 25 first place votes, Calvin (Mich) is ranked second with 574 points and the remaining first place vote and Washington (Mo.) is third with 567 points.

ONU was ranked No. 12 in last week's poll, was No. 15 in the fourth poll, was No. 17 in the third poll, was No. 20 in the second poll and was No. 24 in the first poll.

Mary VanAtta was Ada real estate agent; worked in Ada schools and at ONU

Mary J. VanAtta, 80, died at 4:43 p.m. Jan. 4, 2013, at her residence in Ada.

She was born Oct. 29, 1932, in Saginaw, Mich., to Bert E. and Frances A. Portwine Francisco, who preceded her in death. On Nov. 10, 1951, she married Lloyd C. VanAtta, who survives in Ada.

Mrs. VanAtta worked at Ohio Northern University, Ada Exempted Village School District and was a successful real estate agent. She graduated from Alpena High School in the Class of 1950.

She was a member of the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church and Sugar Grove United Methodist Women. Her generous spirit was displayed by volunteering for Lima Memorial Health System and Hardin County Hospice of Kenton.

Bob Asher owned "This and That Shop"

Charles "Bob" Asher, 77, died at 9:46 p.m. Jan. 3, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born June 29, 1935, in Hyden, Ky., to Charlie and Polly Maggard Asher, who preceded him in death. On Oct. 24, 1953, he married Alberta Kimbler, who survives in Alger. They were married for 59 years.

Mr. Asher was self-employed as owner of the furniture store This & That Shop, Ada. He had also worked at B.F. Goodrich. He was an Army veteran serving from 1954 to 1956, and with the Army Reserves until 1960. He was a member of the Coon Hunters Kennel Club, Harrod.
