It was a great week for ONU track and field athletes. Here's the update.
Women
BOSTON, Mass. — Junior All-American Maggie Krause (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) earned All-America honors for the second time in her career, finishing seventh in the pole vault, to lead Ohio Northern on Friday evening at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Senior Avery Ewing (Kokomo, Ind./Eastern) finished fifth in her heat and 12th overall in the 800-meter dash in 2:16.96, while junior Allison Stevens (Naperville, Ill./Central) was 12th in the pole vault by clearing 3.70 meters.
Krause cleared 3.75 meteres to finish seventh of 20 competitors after entering with the fourth-best qualifying mark of 3.86 meters.
She earned All-America honors the 2018 Outdoor Championships, as she cleared 3.65 meters to finish tied for eighth.
At last year's indoor championships, Krause tied for 12th, clearing 3.60 meters.
Ewing made her second consecutive appearance at the Indoor Championships. She entered the meet as the 20th seed in the 20-women field with a season-best time of 2:14.88.
Ewing also competed as part of ONU's 4x400 relay team indoors in 2018 that finished fourth in their heat and 10th of 12 overall in a school record 3:55.67.
She was also a part of ONU's 4x400 relay team at the 2018 Outdoor Championships. Her foursome finished sixth in its heat and 10th overall in a school record 3:51.22, falling .74 of a second shy of qualifying for the finals.
Stevens made her first appearance at the NCAA Championships event and competed well.
She had the 11th-best qualifying mark, clearing 3.75 meters this season.
"We had a very good meet," ONU head coach Jason Maus said. "All five of our athletes performed well. We had two returning All-Americans that got back on the podium and had some newcomers that handled their first NCAA appearance well. All of our athletes should be proud of their performances today."
The top eight finishers in each event earn All-America honors.
Men
ADA — Senior All-American Ian McVey (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) earned All-America honors in the 5,000-meter run for the second consecutive year and freshman Nate Dean (Euclid/Villa Angela Saint Joseph) finished 4th in his heat and 17th overall in the 400-meter dash Friday evening at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships March 8-9 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.
McVey finished seventh of 20 runners on 14:34.94 to earn All-America honors with his top-8 finish.
He was a returning All-American in the event, finishing fifth in 2018 indoors in 14:34.21. McVey is also a two-time All-American in cross country, finishing fifth at this fall's championship in 24:37 and 10th at the 2017 meet in 24:37.
Dean finished 17th of 20 runners in the 400-meter dash in 49.934 seconds.
He entered the meet with the 18th-fastest time in the 20-man field at :48.75.
