Phyllis K. Hopson 1950 - 2013

Phyllis K. Hopson died at 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 at Lima Memorial Health Systems.

She was born Sept. 14, 1950 in Columbus to Kenneth Howard and Harriet Lucille (Winegardner) VanScoy. On Aug. 12, 1967 she married Kenneth D. Hopson Sr. and he survives in Dunkirk.

Also surviving are a son, Kenneth H. (Amber) Hopson of Dunkirk; three daughters, Mary Hopson and Jennifer (Mathew) Wilch, both of Dunkirk and Leasa K. (Scott) Lee of Elida; a brother, Bryan (Marilyn) VanScoy of Findlay; four sisters, Rachel Tidd of Ada, Marty (Randy) Preston of Dola and Paula Harp and Pauline Coldren, both of Kenton; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Women's swimming & diving earns share of the OAC regular season championship with victory over Baldwin Wallace

The Ohio Northerns womens swimming & diving team clinched a share of the OAC Regular Season Championship in a 190-103 win over Baldwin Wallace on Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.

With the win, ONU stands at 6-5 on the year and 4-1 in the OAC. The Yellow Jackets fall to 4-7, 1-4.

The victory also retains the Golden Kickboard for the Polar Bears.

This is the eighth consecutive OAC Regular Season title for the women's program.

In the 100 yard backstroke, freshman Lindsey Inkrott took first place by a time of 1:02.75.

No. 8 women's basketball stays perfect in OAC play with 72-61 victory over John Carroll

Senior Joanna Snyder scored a game high 22 points to lead the No. 8 Ohio Northern women's basketball team to a 72-61 win over John Carroll on Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.

With the win, Northern extends their winning streak to 15 games and now stands at 16-1 overall and 10-0 in the OAC. The Blue Streaks fall to 10-7, 3-7.

Snyder shot a solid 10-of-15 from field, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists.

Senior Morgan Dumbaugh added 15 points for the Polar Bears.

Beth Switzler and Melissa Spahar paced John Carroll with 13 points each.

ONU came out hot and opened up an early 14-2 lead.

Men's basketball falls to John Carroll, 78-75

Junior Branden Rushton led four players in double figure scoring, but the Ohio Northern men's basketball team lost a tough 78-75 contest to John Carroll on Saturday afternoon at the DeCarlo Center.

The Polar Bears are now 7-10 overall on the season and 3-7 in the OAC, while the Blue Streaks improve to 8-8, 5-5.

Rushton was 7-of-13 from the field and also had four rebounds.

Junior Jared Horstman scored 15 points, while senior Taylor Kuhlman and junior Dominique Royal had 12 points each.

Kenny Janz recorded a double-double for John Carroll with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Polar Bear swimmers 9-1

The No. 17 Ohio Northern men's swimming & diving team won every event in a 231-44 victory over Baldwin Wallace on Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center. The Polar Bears improve to 9-1 and remain perfect with a 5-0 mark in the OAC, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 2-8, 2-3.
