Taylor Willeke: Four more years of basketball in Ada - this time as a Polar Bear

The Ada Icon caught up with Taylor Willeke, Ada High School senior, recently. Here’s a portion of that conversation.

What courses are you taking this semester?
Taylor: Physics, Calculus, Sociology, Personal Finance, Spanish IV and Advanced Prep English 12.

When was the first time you held a basketball?
Taylor:
Probably when I was 2 years old. My dad was the eighth grade basketball coach and he’d take me to practice with him.

Community Economic Development Center at ONU presents workshop on women in business

The Community Economic Development Center (CEDC) at Ohio Northern University continues its entrepreneurship workshop series in the Dicke Forum on Tuesday, April 23. The workshop will be preceded by a networking event at 5:30 p.m. The workshop will follow the networking event and conclude at 7 p.m.

The topic of the workshop will be “Women in Business” with Susan Schertzer, assistant professor of marketing in ONU’s Dicke College of Business Administration. During this workshop, Schertzer will share her successes, mistakes and lucky breaks as a woman in the business world. This event is free and open to the public.

Ada Kiwanis Club thanks Kewpee family for donation

Members of the Ada Kiwanis Club met on April 9 at the Kewpee, in Lima to thank Harry, Myrna and Scott Shutt for their assistance at the recently held 61st annual Pancake and Sausage Day.

Club President Myrna McCurdy formally thanked the Shutt’s for the generous donation. She noted the success of previous years and noted that sponsorships were begun in 2007.

Beginning in that year, the profits from the project have increased significantly. Kewpee owner Harry Shutt said he is glad to be able to help the club as they do their best to improve the Ada community.

Ada Icon says: "Celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month in May"

Since 1927, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association has celebrated Better Hearing and Speech Month each May to raise public awareness of speech and language disorders that affect 14 million Americans.

Speech and language disorders can take many forms and can limit academic achievement, social adjustment, and career advancement. An individual may be born with a speech or language disorder, or it may be caused by accidental injury or illness.

Hootenannies 4-H organizes for 2013

The Hardin County Hootenannies 4-H club’s last meeting was held at the Ag Credit meeting room. Ron Rofe, advisor, opened our meeting. Twelve members were present. Sean Hurley led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Levi Beiler led the 4-H pledge. We turned in our project forms. Then, we had our election of officers. 

UA state apprenticeship contest held in Lima

The United Association of Plumbers, Pipefitters and Service Technicians will hold its state apprenticeship contest in Lima on April 23, 24, and 25 at the office of UA Local 776 at 1300 Bowman Road behind the Allen County Fairgrounds.

The top apprentices from 15 different locals across Ohio will be competing for top   honors in plumbing, pipefitting, welding, sprinkler fitting and HVAC service. Representing Local 776 in this year’s competition are Matt Chiles-pipefitter, Nathan Chamberlain-welder and Dallas Hoffman-HVAC.
