Women's basketball ranked No. 9 in final USA Today Sports poll; No. 10 in final D3hoops.com poll

The Ohio Northern women's basketball team finished the season ranked No. 9 in the USA Today Sports Division III Coaches poll and No. 10 in the final D3hoops.com poll.

In the USA Today Sports poll, ONU received 125 votes.

National champion DePauw (Ind.) finished the season ranked No. 1 with 200 points, Amherst (Mass.) was second with 178 and national runner-up Wisconsin-Whitewater was third with 174 points.

In the D3hoops.com poll, Northern received 352 points.

DePauw (Ind.) was first with 625, Wisconsin-Whitewater was second with 593 and Hope (Mich.) was third with 552 points.

Easier than you think

Mary Shuster of Ada, donated blood on March 18.  A regular blood donor, she has been giving blood every time the American Red Cross bloodmobile has visited Ada for the last three years.  She doesn't keep track, but imagines she's over a gallon donor.

Brittany Miller wins twice to lead women's tennis to 6-3 victory over Division II Walsh

Sophomore Brittany Miller won two matches to lead the Ohio Northern women's tennis team to a 6-3 win over Division II Walsh on Tuesday evening at the ONU Sports Center.

With the win, the Polar Bears are now 12-3 on the season. The Cavaliers fall to 4-17 overall.

Miller teamed with sophomore Kristin Cellentani for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Miller also scored the match clinching win by a 6-1, 6-4 score at No. 5 singles.

"I took the court with the match tied at 3-3," Miller said. "I didn't think about the score at all. I just stuck to my game and didn't get too fancy with anything."

Women's tennis tops Wittenberg 9-0; opens OAC play with 9-0 win over Wilmington

The Ohio Northern women's tennis team picked up a pair of 9-0 victories over Wittenberg and Wilmington on Saturday at Westwood Tennis & Fitness Club.

The Polar Bears are now 11-3 on the season and 1-0 in OAC play. Wittenberg falls to 3-5 and Wilmington is now 0-1, 0-1.

Against Wittenberg, Northern dropped only four games on its way to sweeping all three doubles courts.

Sophomore Brittany Miller and junior Carly Olmstead won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Sophomore Kristin Cellentani and freshman Taryn Stromback won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles and freshman Rachael Miller and junior Michelle Tuma won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Ohio Northern's Cody Lovejoy named 2013 NCAA Division III Elite 89 Award winner

Ohio Northern sophomore Cody Lovejoy won the 2013 NCAA Division III Wrestling Elite 89 Award on Saturday.

The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA championships.
