Lovejoy brothers go 10-0, win titles at 32-team Wheaton Invitational

Junior Colt Lovejoy and senior Cody Lovejoy each went 5-0 and won their respective weight class championships to lead the Ohio Northern wrestling team at the Wheaton (Ill.) Pete Willson Invitational on Friday and Saturday at King's Arena.

The Polar Bears (13-4 overall) finished fifth of 32 teams with 82 points.

No. 2-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater won the team title with 173 points, No. 9 Messiah (Pa.) was second with 134.5, No. 7 Mount Union was fourth with 98 and No. 12 Alma (Mich.) was fourth with 91.5.

ONU finished ahead of No. 13 Baldwin Wallace (81 points) and No. 29 Augustana (Ill.) (80 points) and No. 13 Trine (Ind.) (38.5 points) in the team standings.

Colt Lovejoy entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed in the 165-pound weight class, but earned victories over fourth-seeded and No. 9-ranked David Shapiro of BW in the semifinals and over second-seeded and No. 5-ranked Matt Tuttle of Alma in the finals.

He improves to 27-4 on the year.

Cody Lovejoy also knocked off a pair of nationally-ranked foes on his was to the title.

He entered the tournament as the top seed and ranked No. 1 nationally at Heavyweight. He defeated fourth-seeded and No. 8-ranked Anthony Edgren of Wis.-Whitewater in the semifinals and second-seeded and No. 2-ranked Mackenzie Green of Trine in the finals.

He won two matches by pin and the other three by scores of 10-0, 6-0 and 2-0 to complete his dominating performance on the weekend.

Cody Lovejoy is now ranked 35-0 with a NCAA-best 22 pins on the season.

Two other Ohio Northern wrestlers placed in their respective weight classes.

Sophomore Kyler Deeter placed fifth at 157 pounds with a 5-2 record and eighth-seeded freshman Evan Morgan placed eighth at 149 pounds with a 3-3 record.

Deeter improves to 17-10 on the year, while Morgan moves to 24-14.

The Polar Bears will return to Ohio Athletic Conference action on Tuesday with a road match at John Carroll.
