Phillip Zoladz, Ohio Northern University assistant professor of psychology, presented two posters at the 43rd annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in San Diego on Nov. 9-13.
Five research assistants (three current ONU students and two alumni) from Zoladz’s laboratory joined him for the presentation. The topics of the two posters were “Stress administered immediately before learning reduces false memory production and selectively enhances true memory in females” and “Pre-learning social evaluative stress exerts sex-specific effects on long-term picture memory.”
The two ONU alumni were Ashlee Warnecke, a 2011 psychology graduate from Kalida, Ohio, and Julia Pisansky a 2013 psychology graduate from Canfield, Ohio. The three current students were David Peters, a fourth-year pharmacy major from Canton, Ohio; Andrea Kalchik, a senior psychology major from Zanesville, Ohio; and Rachael Aufdenkampe, a senior psychology major from Vermilion, Ohio.
“Having undergraduate students present their research findings at such a large, internationally recognized conference exemplifies what our program at ONU is all about: that is, using high-impact practices to graduate students who are professionally socialized and research ready,” Zoladz said. “The research experience that students undergo in my laboratory very much resembles graduate-level training and provides them with a significant advantage over the competition when applying for graduate study.”
More than 30,000 neuroscientists traveled to San Diego in mid-November to take part in Neuroscience 2013, the world’s largest meeting focused on scientific discovery related to the brain and nervous system.
The event brought to life more than 15,000 scientific presentations showing innovative advances in techniques and valuable new research about brain structure, health, disease and treatments. In addition to the posters and scientific lectures, the meeting featured 600 exhibitors and 34 professional development workshops and networking functions.
