McGuffey receives $44K Nature Works funding for playground expansion

A grant for $44,621 has been awarded to McGuffey Park for park expansion and installing playground equipment, new surface and border, chain link fencing and bench.

The grant is one of 68 recently announced by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). $1.7 million in grants will support dozens of new outdoor recreation projects across the state. Projects include the development of playgrounds, natural playscapes, trails, restrooms, dog parks, baseball fields, basketball courts, tennis and pickleball courts, splash pads, and picnic shelters.

Obituary for Margaret Mary (Robichaux) Elliott

Margaret Mary (Robichaux) Elliott, age 93, of Sylvania, Ohio and formerly of Ada, Ohio and Punta, Gorda, Florida passed away peacefully on November 6, 2022. She was born on August 18, 1929, in Taft, Louisiana to Albert and Edna (Haydel) Robichaux.

Margaret was the oldest of five children. Her younger siblings Albert “Dennis,” Milton “Jackie,” and Joan preceded her in death. Her youngest brother, David Robichaux, survives in Mexico City, Mexico.

At the age of 16, Margaret attended nursing school. Tuition for the entire program was $72 and covered all three years of training, uniforms, room and board. In 1949 Margaret graduated, moved to Kansas to work as the head nurse at a small hospital before returning to New Orleans after one year. She worked as a nurse at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana and eventually was promoted to be head nurse of female orthopedics floor. As a member of the Charity Hospital Alumni, Margaret established a nursing scholarship in her name for future students.

It was at Charity Hospital that she met her future husband, Dr. Robert Elliott, who was also known to friends as “Jake.” The two were engaged in 1954 and married in Columbus, Ohio on August 26, 1954.

Women’s Soccer wins second consecutive OAC Tournament championship
COLUMBUS — The Ohio Northern women's soccer team defeated Capital 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, November 5, at Bernlohr Stadium, earning its second straight Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament championship.

"We told the girls, 'Go find a way to have that special moment that you deserve,' and they did that today," ONU head coach Mark Batman said. "I'm really proud of these girls."

The second-seeded Polar Bears improve to 13-1-5 overall while the top-seeded Comets fall to 12-3-3.

Liberty Township EMS and fire department levies on General Election ballot

Tuesday, November 8, 2022 is Election Day with in person voting from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. The polling location for Ada precincts North and South is Ada Community Health Professionals Building, 1200 S Main St.

Open burn reminder

The Allen County Health Department has issued this reminder:

Ohio law limits what and where you can open burn. Open burning can release many kinds of toxic fumes. Leaves and plant materials send aloft millions of spores when they catch fire, causing many people with allergies to have difficulty breathing.

Michael Lynn Patton obituary

Michael Lynn Patton, age 65, of Lexington, Kentucky formally of New Stark, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022, at 9:19 AM at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born on December 29, 1956, in Lima, Ohio to the late Joe and Earnesteen (Hicks) Patton.  Michael spent the majority of his life in Lexington, Kentucky with his wife, Margie Tackett, who preceded him in death.
