Joanne Ruth Amsler was an STNA

Joanne Ruth Amsler, age 93, of Dola, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at her home. 

She was born on February 13, 1932 in Ada, Ohio to Leonard Pearl and Marjorie (Cochran) Wright, Sr. Joanne was preceded in death by her parents and foster parents: Oscar and Grace Patterson. She was previously married to Clyde “Sonny” Amsler.

Verizon emails some 45810 customers about work-related outages

Some Ada area Verizon customers have received a text message from the telecommunications company advising them of potential disruptions to service in the coming days. A text message received on Friday, February 21 reads as follows: 

"Verizon Msg: We're upgrading our network near Ada, OH 45810 within the next week. You may experience a temporary disruption to your mobile services and/or wireless home internet service. In limited cases, work may shift out as much as 2 weeks. Thanks for your patience as we make the network that America relies on even better."

The Icon has reached out to Verizon for further details.

Ada wrestlers 8th at sectional; Simon and Riblet take 2nd

LIMA – The Ada High School wrestling team finished eighth at the 15-team Div. III sectional tournament hosted Saturday by Lima Central Catholic.

Allen East won the sectional title with 163.5 points, while Coldwater finished a close second at 157. The Bulldogs scored 78.5 points to tie with Antwerp.

Bulldog senior Landon Simon finished second in the 215 lbs. bracket to make it to districts. Ada junior Silas Riblet also took second in the 126 lbs. division.

Junior Zaiden Denslow took third at 120 lbs. to become the third Bulldog district qualifier.

St. Mark Community Meal is February 26

St. Mark Lutheran Church of Ada will be serving up it's Community Meal on Wednesday, February 26, from 5 to 6:30, or whenever they run out. 

The meal is free and open to the public. You may dine in, carry out or drive up for curbside service.  If you plan on getting more than 8 meals you need to call 419-792-0911 before noon on Monday.

The menu is spaghetti and meatballs, green beans, garlic bread, fruit and cookie.

The church is located at the corner of Johnson and Lincoln streets.

Organizers note, "We look forward to seeing and serving you."

Ada’s Baumgartner 3rd in state backstroke

CANTON – Ada High School senior Lily Baumgartner finished on the podium at the state finals in two individual events to conclude her four-year run at the Ohio Div. II meet in Canton’s C.T. Branin Natatorium Friday evening.

Baumgartner finished third in the eight-girl, 100-yard backstroke A Finals Friday night in a time of 55.82.

Baumgartner also touched seventh at the 100 butterfly A Finals Friday evening in a time of 57.48.

“Lily did fantastic, and I am so proud of her,” said Ada head coach Ashley Robey. “She has put in a lot of work over the years to be able to podium every single year of her high school career, and it shows.

“She always keeps pushing,” she added. “She is a fighter.”

Bulldog boys basketball edged by LCC in OT in sectionals

LIMA – The visiting Ada High School boys basketball team battled hard but lost a 45-42 overtime thriller at Lima Central Catholic in a taut Div. VI sectional final at Monsignor Herr Gymnasium on Friday, February 21.

Bulldog Zack Zimmerman forced overtime by splashing a clutch three-pointer near the end of regulation. 

Ada fell behind by five late in the extra session yet rallied and had a triple try to tie it at the very end. But the shot came up short.

The Bulldogs finished the season 14-9 with the tough defeat.  

Top-seeded LCC improved to 15-7 after the hard-fought win. They advance to the district semifinals at Elida vs. third seed Bluffton Wednesday, February 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Flu-related death of teen reported in Allen County

Allen County Public Health and the Ohio Department of Health confirmed the first pediatric flu-related death of the 2024-2025 flu season occurred in Allen County. The deceased individual was a teenager under the age of 18 from Allen County. This tragic loss underscores the seriousness of the flu and the importance of prevention, especially with flu activity at very high levels at this time. 

Weekend Doctor: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

An estimated 10 million Americans suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a condition that can significantly impact daily life, mood and overall well-being. Winter-patterned SAD is more common due to shorter daylight hours. Therefore, this disorder is especially prevalent in individuals living in northern regions, where daylight is limited for extended periods and is less common in those residing in sunnier climates such as Florida.
