Bulldog girls basketball: Burkhart shot beats USV in final seconds

McGUFFEY__Exactly two months after beating arch-rival Upper Scioto Valley by 13, the Ada girls basketball team went on the road and edged the Rams in a much closer January 30 battle that went down to the very end.

With the game tied in the final seconds, Bulldog senior playmaker Olivia Burkhart drove left and knocked down a clutch short runner from the left baseline with under three ticks remaining to give Ada a 48-46 win at Alumni Fieldhouse. 

Bulldog swim team competes at Kenton

KENTON__The Ada High School swim teams competed in a dual meet at county rival Kenton on Senior Night in the Hardin County YMCA on January 30.

The Wildcats won the combined team meet by a score of 166-83.

Ada freshman Jacob Szippl won the 50-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke to pace the Bulldogs.

Ada Exempted Village Schools launch superintendent job search

The Ada Exempted Village School District Board of Education has selected the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) to facilitate its search for a new superintendent. The interim superintendent is Dennis Recker.

Income tax filing assistance offered by ONU's VITA program

Ohio Northern University’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is again offering free income tax preparation for community members who make about $70,000 or less annually.

In turn, this service enables ONU’s Dicke College of Business Administration students to receive practical training with tax preparation software and interpersonal communication, and to become IRS-certified to help prepare basic and intermediate tax returns. Students also gain experience in identifying and helping clients claim special credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly, which can significantly influence filing outcomes.

Services include offering general filing guidance, completing tax returns for individuals, and e-filing those returns with the IRS.

Ash Wednesday “Drive-Thru Ashes” At Ada First UMC

On February 14, 2024, Christians around the world will observe Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent leading up to Easter Sunday and the resurrection of Christ. 

Ada First United Methodist Church is extending an invitation to the community for a “Drive-Thru” Ash Wednesday observance. As you enter the car port from Highland Street, you will experience the significance of Ash Wednesday through scripture reading, prayer, the imposition of ashes, and a blessing, all from the comfort of your car. All are welcome

  • “Drive-Thru Ashes” will be available from 11:30 a.m.-1p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. 

AHS students hit the road to perform in robotics and music

ROBOTICS
The AHS Robotics team led by Mr. Acheson competed at Bellefontaine Middle School, advancing through qualifying matches and making the playoffs. 

OMEA 
The AHS Music department had five singers and three instrumentalists particpate at the OMEA (Ohio Music Educator's Association) District 3 Honors Choir At Neiswander Performing Arts Center in Van Wert on Sunday January 10, 2024. Some 75 students were selected through an audition process. Justin Bowden, Joe Crawford, Jilli Hazelton, Rey Hurley and Kiya Tabler were in the choir.  

Selected Pieces included Grateful with Kiya Tabler as a featured soloist, The Circus Band, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, Jesu Bleibet Meine Freude, Think on me and Peace I Leave You.

Ethan D'Souza, Ave Martin and Tori Rausch were selected to be in the Honor's Band. D3 Honor Band students had the pleasure working with Daniel Tembras, director of Instrumental Studies from Purdue University.

Billy Ray Brummett was a truck driver

Billy Ray Brummett, age 77, of Alger, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center of Minister.  

He was born on August 28, 1946, in Pineville, Kentucky to the late James and Goldie (Defevers) Brummett.    

Two Ada area boys to compete at Punt Pass & Kick nationals

The Ada Area Chamber of Commerce has shared that "We have two of our very own heading to Las Vegas, Nevada for the PPKUSA National Punt, Pass, & Kick Competition! Maverick Hughes and Colton Crawford will be representing Ada on February 3.... We’re so proud of you guys!"

Richard L. Miller worked for NAPA

Richard L. “Dick” Miller, age 69, of Lima, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, Columbus. 

He was born on February 27, 1954, in Lima, Ohio to the late Robert and Jean (Thompson) Miller.  On July 17, 1995 Dick married Donna Asher and she survives in Lima.
