Bulldog tennis battles Bath on Sr. Night

The Ada High School tennis team hosted powerful Bath on Senior Night and battled hard before losing a tough 4-1 decision Wednesday evening, April 26, at the park courts.

The Bulldogs fell to 2-5 with the difficult defeat.

Sandra Decker was a secretary at Ohio Northern

Sandra S. “Sandy” Decker, age 67, of Alger, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at 9:28 a.m. at Lima Memorial Health Systems.

She was born on October 6, 1955, in Lima, Ohio to Bernard N. and Lois M. (Johnson) Shaw. Her father preceded her in death on October 16, 2018, and her mother survives in Alger. On September 26, 1987, Sandra married Jimmy “JD” Decker, Jr. and he survives in Arlington.

Also surviving are her two daughters: Sarah (Shawn Grubb) Decker of Ada and Jessica (Michael Briley) Decker of Alger; a granddaughter, Syddaleigh Sioux Briley; two brothers: Terry (Sigrid) Shaw of Albuquerque, NM and Alan (Lisa) Shaw of Harrod; two sisters: Mary (Charles) Melvin of Carleton, MI and Cheryl Saunders of White River Junction, VT.

Bulldog baseball falls to LCC

The Ada High School baseball team lost a 13-7 slugfest to visiting Lima Central Catholic in a non-conference contest Monday evening, April 24.

The Bulldog boys fell to 4-9 overall with the defeat.  LCC improved to 6-1 with the win.

Playing at home, the Ada High School softball team rallied late but lost 5-4 to Lima Central Catholic in a non-conference matchup Monday evening, April 24.

The Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, and had the tying run on third base with one out.

Brown, Grose dominate hurdle events

DOLA–The Ada High School girls track and field team took fourth and the Bulldog boys finished fifth at the annual 12-team Hardin Northern Invitational Saturday, April 22.

Ada juniors Julian Grose and Jackson Brown crossed the finish line one-two in the 300-meter hurdles to post the top Ada individual showing.

Brown also won the 110-meter high hurdles, while Grose took fourth.

Posting third-place finishes for Ada were Logan Jolliff (100 meters), Mariah King (300 hurdles), Lydia DeMascio (800 meters) and Courtney Sumner (400 meters).

Riverdale won the girls team title with 186.5 points. Pandora-Gilboa was a distant second (78), with Ada a strong fourth of 11 at 51.5 points.

Leipsic edged host Hardin Northern 117-103 to capture the boys team crown. Ada came in a solid fifth with 68 points.

Ohio Victory Gardens offers free seeds

HARDIN COUNTY–It’s time once again to get your hands dirty and start growing! The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and Ohio State University Extension offices are kicking off the fourth year of the Ohio Victory Gardens program. Due to high demand, the program has expanded to include 50, up from 42 counties last year. Thousands of seed sample kits are available for free to the public to get people planting.

Specific days and times for each office are available on the Ohio Victory Gardens website, as well as planting resources and information. Hardin County OSU Extension will make available Ohio Victory Garden seed packets containing a combination of carrots, cucumber, lettuce, and sunflowers. Seeds are currently available at the Hardin County OSU Extension Office, 1021 W Lima Street in Kenton and will also be available at its annual Master Gardener Volunteers Plant Sale being held Saturday, May 20 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm in the Friendship Gardens of Hardin County located at 960 W Kohler Street in Kenton.

Weekend Doctor: GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease)

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus. When this type of backflow happens repeatedly over time, it can lead to esophageal irritation causing GERD. Frequent acid reflux or reflux of nonacidic content from the stomach into the esophagus is what causes GERD. When you swallow, a circular band of muscle around the lower part of your esophagus, called the lower esophageal sphincter, relaxes to allow food/liquid to flow into the stomach. After this occurs, the sphincter then closes; however, if the sphincter does not relax as it should and/or it weakens over a period of time, stomach acid then flows back into the esophagus causing irritation/inflammation to the lining of the esophagus. 

Some very common signs and symptoms of GERD include burning in the chest after eating (which may be more noticeable at night or when lying flat), regurgitation of food or liquid that may cause a sour taste in the mouth, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), upper abdominal discomfort and the sensation of a lump in the throat (globus sensation).

Bulldog tennis loss at St. Marys

The visiting Ada High School tennis team lost a tight 3-2 battle at St. Marys Thursday evening, April 20.

The Bulldogs dropped to 2-3 with the loss. SM improved to 8-2 after the win.
