Lions taking mulch orders now; sales and delivery begin April 30

The Ada Lions Club mulch sales will begin on Saturday, April 30. Bulk and bagged mulch can be purchased in Ada or delivered to Ada addresses and the surrounding area.

The scholarship fundraiser was begun in 2000. Since that time, the Ada Lions Club has presented 103 scholarship awards totaling $92,750.00. This does not include awards for 2022, which are still pending.

Mulch prices:

Brown Bulk:  $35 per bobcat scoop, Brown Bag:  $5 per bag

Black Bulk:  $40 per bobcat scoop, Black Bag:  $5 per bag

Delivery is available on Saturdays only and the sale is on Saturdays only.

Summary of April 5 Village Council meeting

The April 5 meeting of the Ada Village Council began at 6:15 p.m., fifteen minutes ahead of the usual time, for an 2021 audit exit conference with Julian Grube. The audit was filed last week. This meeting ended at 6:33  p.m., followed immediately by the Regular Council meeting called to order by Mayor Dave Retterer.

PUBLIC COMMENTS

Ada Icon reporter Paula Scott asked if in the event of such an emergency as the March 31 manhunt, would the village use Nixle or other communication to notify residents about lockdowns and an "all clear" announcement.

Founder's Day 2022

In March 1866, a 28-year-old, recently discharged Union veteran, Henry Solomon Lehr, detrained at the Ada depot. Classes began on Monday, August 14, 1871, with 147 students enrolled.

AHS softball photo-story: Bulldogs walk off Panthers

The Ada High School girls softball team doubled twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to score the winning run and defeat McComb 3-2 in a drizzly non-league game Tuesday evening, April 5, at Ada's War Memorial Park.

The Lady Bulldogs evened their record at 2-2 this season with the walk-off win.

With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the last inning, junior Raeya Finn led off by stroking a pinch-hit double to the gap in left-center field. 

Freshman Jenna Bassitt then drilled a line drive to center field, but it was caught.

AHS baseball: Bulldogs downed by McComb

The Ada High School baseball team lost 16-3 to visiting McComb in a non-league contest on a damp and gray Tuesday evening, April 5, at Ada's War Memorial Park.

The Bulldogs trailed 3-1 after the first frame and 5-1 after two innings.

McComb stretched its lead with five runs in the fourth. Ada answered with two runs, but then the Panthers pushed across six more scores in the fifth to provide the run-rule margin.

The Bulldog record dropped to 2-2 with the defeat.

Bulldog track 2nd at five-team AE meet

The Ada High School track and field teams each finished a solid second at a five-school meet hosted by Allen East at Goodwin Field on Tuesday, April 5.

The Mustangs edged Ada to win the boys team title, while Waynesfield-Goshen took first on the girls side.

AE scored 135 points to 111.5 by the Bulldog boys. The W-G girls won with 121 points, with Ada second at 86.

April 6 Ada Schools delayed by fog

March madness at Ada Elementary

Second annual Read-a-thon

The second annual Read-a-thon at Ada Elementary School has been a wild romp benefitting Deb’s Dogs. The school goal is $5,000.

To motivate students and teachers, principal Tim Closson volunteered to dress up on April 1 in a wild ensemble selected by the students. Each grade level chose an item for him to wear. If they didn’t reach their reading goal, he would not have worn that special item.

Kindergarten: Hat (or as it turned out, a crown)

First grade: Crazy shirt

Second grade: Cape

Third grade: Tie

Fourth grade: Carry something around (a purse that conveniently held his walkie-talkie)

Fifth grade: Crazy pants
