D3football.com picks Eik, Hahn and Bever for All-Region 4 honors

Seniors Austin Eick (Rossford) and Brody Hahn (Louisville) and junior Josh Bever (Ashland) were named All-Region 4 by D3football.com for 2021.

Eick and Bever were Second Team All-Region honorees, while Hahn was a Third Team All-Region selection.

Eick is now a three-time All-Conference selection at receiver, after earning Honorable Mention kudos in 2019 and 2020 and First Team honors in 2021.

United Way at 90% of 2021 goal

The United Way of Hardin County is at 90% of the $155,000 fundraising goal for 2021.

December 15 BVHS livestream; invitation to submit questions

Blanchard Valley Health System (BVHS) will host a special Facebook Live at noon on Wednesday, December 15. The topic will be “The Impact of the Rising COVID-19 Cases Within Our Community.” 

Serving as hosts of the event will be BVHS President & CEO Myron Lewis, William Kose, MD, vice president of special projects and Renee Smith, MD, chief medical officer. 

The event will be streamed on the health system’s Facebook page, facebook.com/BlanchardValleyHealthSystem/. Community members can “like” the corporate Facebook account of BVHS and visit the page to watch live.

Summary of December 7 village council reports and actions

At the December 7 regular meeting of the Village of Ada council, actions and reports included the following:

PERSONNEL

The council unanimously approved a 4% salary increase for all non-union employees. They also voted unanimously for a $1/hour increase for employee Eileen Peterman.

Tom Vermillion worked for Arvin Meritor

Thomas J. “Tom” Vermillion, age 78, passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

He was born on February 13, 1943, in Kenton, Ohio to the late Frank and Mary (Warren) Vermillion. On June 1, 1963, Tom married Linda L. Reese and she preceded him in death on October 11, 2017.

Tom is survived by his two children: Beth (Chad) Walker of Kingsville, TX and Keith (Trudi) Vermillion of Ada; five grandchildren: Steven Vermillion, Joseph “Joey” Vermillion, Kimberly Walker, Samuel Walker and Savannah Walker; and five great grandchildren.

Facebook viewers help I.D. shoplifting suspect

The Ada, Ohio police sought assistance from the public to identify a white male shoplifting suspect on December 7--by posting a security camera video on Facebook and noting the suspect's vehicle color and make, as well as other identifying features.

Later that same day, Police Chief Michael Harnishfeger reported to village council that the suspect had been identified thanks to the response of social media followers.

Riverdale spurts past Ada girls in fourth quarter

Visiting Riverdale High School girls basketball team broke open a tie game with a 12-0 run to start the fourth period and went on to beat the Ada team 53-41 in a non-conference game Tuesday night, December 8.

Tied 33-33 after three quarters of play, the more experienced Lady Falcons outscored Ada 20-8 in the decisive fourth period to win going away. 

The Lady Bulldogs are 2-4 with the defeat. The Falcon girls improved to 3-4 with the victory.

"We crumbled after it was 33-33," said Ada head coach Morgan Bass. "Riverdale wanted it more, they were tougher in that moment. They had five seniors on the floor."

Ada receives $218K water infrastructure grant

On December 7, the third round of Ohio BUILDS Water Infrastructure Grant Projects were announced including:

Ada (Hardin County) will receive a $ 218,250 grant to cover the planning and engineering design for a project that will implement necessary improvements needed at the drinking water plant to comply with EPA guidelines and recommendations and OSHA standards due to undersized, failing, or obsolete equipment. This project will benefit 5,544 people.

Gregory Lee Young worked for Ford Motor

Gregory Lee Young, age 68, passed away on Monday, December 6, 2021, at his residence.

He was born on October 31, 1953, in Lima, Ohio to the late Perry and Donna (Corbet) Young, Jr.  On July 14, 1973, Gregory married Trudi A. Meeker and she survives in Harrod.

Also surviving are his three children: Nathan (Stacey) Young of Harrod, Gabe (Sheena) Young of Lima and Lydia (Larry) Nickles of Harrod; seven grandchildren: Alyssa (Brent), Gracie (Gavin), Carter, Jac, Aubrey, Ethan and Aaliyah; and a sister-in-law, Lisa Young of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers: Stephen and Kevin Young.

Bulldog swimmers fare well in opener

The Ada swim team dove into its season with three wins in a five-team meet at the Putnam County YMCA Monday night, December 6.

Ada beat three teams in combined boys/girls dual meet scores. They defeated St. Henry 82-50, McComb 92-8 and Cory-Rawson 90-8. Bluffton defeated the Bulldogs, 100-47.

In boys results, Ada defeated Cory 42-0 and McComb 39-8. The Bulldog boys also beat St. Henry, 38-18. Bluffton defeated the Ada boys, 53-21.

In girls team scores, Ada defeated St. Henry 44-32, McComb 53-0 and C-R 48-8. The Bluffton girls beat the Lady Bulldogs, 47-26.
